I love this set because it has everything you need to be able to draw.This charcoal pencil set has three levels of hardness in charcoal pencils; hard, medium and soft, it has 2 sets equal. I loved these because it has all you need in one set. The different hardness of the pencils and charcoal sticks are so great! because you can add contrast, shadows and gradient in your drawings! The pencils break with light pressure, and the needed eraser is softer than a stuffed animal. The Willow sticks and pencils are the only thing positive for this review. And that is about 1/8 of the product. Also, it all comes in a box with a “container trayâ€, which is a joke because it comes cracked and is made from super thin plastic. A case would’ve been nice.

In this category I can definitely call myself an expert, having spent 4 years with my hands covered in charcoal and pastels from drawing, blending and smudging in art school… Despite it being many years ago, I still enjoy getting my hands dirty using them as an additional tool along with the blending sticks, smudgers and erasers.This is a really nice beginner charcoal set! I’m impressed with the smoothness and various hardness levels of the pencils for detail as well as the included tools. I was super impressed with the willow sticks, they were so smooth! They left marks on my drawing pad like butter, and OMG the paper blender and smudge stick on it left beautiful and smooth gradients. It really reminded me how much I loved drawing with such tactile tools. There’s something really satisfying about creating a piece with such raw and basic elements, and getting dirty!The pencils are pretty good, along with the hardnesses… But I do still consider it a beginner and intermediate set despite some of the high quality willow and sticks, because it’s balanced with less sophisticated items. Some of the pencils hardnesses aren’t very discernible or different. Like the white, which I used on colored pastel drawing paper mixed with charcoal to blend gradients, and the two that need sharpened, there’s not much difference between the light and dark, maybe a 10% color difference. They don’t really detract from the set and will still be very useful, it just may take some extra work. For an inexpensive set, I’d totally use this for a class and as well as for myself but I would still supplement the pencils with high-end name brand ones and save the average ones for backups.Though I can offer a small pro-tip, they say to use the included razor knife to sharpen the pencils instead of a traditional pencil sharpener, especially for the ones that aren’t sharpened at all to start with, start with a sharpener until the charcoal is starting to show then finish with the knife just at the tip. This will save a lot of time and hacking at your pencil. I do the same for the ones that are sharpened as well, when the tips break or get nubby. I sharpen enough just to get the shape started then hone it with the knife.
