BOTTOM LINE UP FRONTIf you already have a home alarm system, and Kidde wired smoke detectors, you can use this unit to connect your smokes to your central alarm system. The benefit, obviously, is that the fire department will be called in the event of a fire, even if you're not there or incapacitated.I installed it myself, and it was pretty easy, but hiring a professional to do this would still make it well worth it. It's nice having the peace of mind knowing a central alarm monitoring service is watching your smoke detectors 24/7. I imagine there is a big difference in outcome when the fire department is called as soon as the smokes go off versus when the neighbors finally notice the house is on fire!INSTALLATIONMost alarm systems, even the wireless ones, have the ability to monitor one or two hardwired alarms, be it a smoke detector relay like this or a window alarm. Some will want the wired alarm to be normally closed circuit, and some will expect normally open circuit. Fortunately, this relay module has outputs for both. The hardest part (and it's not hard) is just figuring out what your alarm system expects, and how much of a "termination resistor" it wants, if any. You just buy that resistor (if needed) at Radio Shack, pick the right leads according to your alarm manual and the relay module manual, and it's very easy to wire everything together. Your alarm system manual probably has an explicit diagram. You can wire this into any of your smoke detector boxes, so just pick the location that is most convenient to your alarm system. As I said, if the above instructions sound like something you don't want to mess with, then I would still recommend buying this and having a professional install it. I doubt it will take more than an hour of their time.If you already have an alarm system and Kidde smoke detectors installed in your home, this is a great buy. For a relatively small bit of extra money and time (over what you already paid for your security system) you'll have a fire alarm system similar to the ones commercial buildings have and the peace of mind of a monitored fire alarm system. My company doesn't even charge me any more per month. It's just another alarm zone as far as they are concerned, the only difference being that they will call the fire department instead of the police.

This worked perfectly for connecting my Kidde smoke alarms to my Honeywell Vista 21ip alarm system. I also purchased the CO120x to monitor my interconnected Kidde CO alarms. A couple of notes on my install:I ran a 14-3 NM out of the smoke alarm in my basement into a 4-11/16" junction box with a locking switch. The switch will allow me to turn the relays off if I am getting false alarms. I did an investigation and found that the NO & NC circuits stay out when power is cut. So shutting off power to the relays effectively disconnects the alarm system from the smoke and CO alarms. This could come in handy while soldering in the basement or if your cooking is causing a temporary problem. I put a locking switch on to ensure it won't accidentally be disconnected. I ran another 14-3 NM to an adjacent 4-11/16" junction box where I installed the two relays with double sided tape and made all electrical connections. I then ran the NO, NC, Common from the two relays into an adjacent but electrically isolated 1 gang junction box. I did this because you have to electrically isolate the 120v from the alarms low voltage wiring for safety. I then ran a 4 conductor cable from my alarm and used 2 conductors for the SM120x (NO & Common) and the other two for the CO120x (NO & Common). If you put this on Zone 1 you are required to install a 2 ohm end of line resister between the NO & Common on that associated relay. I also opted to install the resistor between the NO & Common of the CO120x. Then when you set up the zones be sure to select NO and EOLR. The EOLR provides line supervision. In a non alarm state the alarm system will read 2 ohms resistance in the circuit. In an alarmed state it will read infinity ohms resistance. This way if the line is cut or the connection is compromised your alarm will notify you with a trouble code.

Bought this for the Kidde Smoke/CO detectors in my house. My ex-alarm company originally installed BRK relays on Kidde smoke detectors and they don't work. Installation was simple enough if you are familiar with relays and know whether your alarm is expecting NC or NO switch. My only concern is the unit felt warm after it was powered up for a few minutes. The unit has a DC output so I guess it has a transformer. I don't need the DC output so this is just going to waste energy. Overall I am happy with it, but it would be better with no DC output. The relay works great and the alarm goes off when I press the test button on the smoke detector.

this is very hard to find part. it only works with kiddie brand detector. I installed a kiddie smoke/carbon monoxide detector in a auto repair shop. at first i just used the blue carbon monoxide module because the plans called for carbon monoxide detector to activate a large exhaust fan which open gravity shutters on a fresh air louver.but there was no way to prove the carbon monoxide detector worked for the inspector.we blew smoke into the detector. it went off like it was supposed to. but it would not activate the fan (on the blue relay)so we got this smoke relay so it could be set off with smoke.I dont know why it is so complicated to activate a relay with a detector, but it is.it inconclusion we installed the blue and black module in a single kiddie smoke/carbon monoxide detector and we used a 110volt coil relay to activate large fan

Put it in a junction box next to a smoke alarm in furnace room. Used a little chunk of NMD90 between the two. I have my alarm system (zone definition) set to monitor this input 24x7, this links via EyesOn out to my phone with an Invisalink(sp?) Ethernet alarm board (uses ISP communication vrs modem land line). Works well. I wanted to better protect our dog when we go shopping. DCS alarm system does not have to be activated to monitor the smokes, and notify our cell phones. Note, a 9Vdc signal relayed could likely replace this board, as I don't use most of its functionality, but this worked nice. I only used the dry contacts output. I think I needed EOL resistor for this input type. Fun project, for piece of mind.
