I just got in from flying with this. It wasn't perfect, but I am overall very pleased.I am normally a dual line kite flyer where I lay out the lines and pull the kite into the air. I got a single line kite as a present and found the wrapping a line around the included handle to be totally insufficient, so I bought this. I highly recommend getting one of these types of winders.I decided to spend a little more for this model over the plastic models, one of the reasons is the brake (look at the trigger in the picture). The brake was not strong enough to stop the paying out of the line. However, it significantly slowed the speed so that I could easily grab the knob. While not perfect, I consider this to be a valuable feature.I had a little uncomfortable on the bottom two fingers when reeling the kite in. Perhaps, I may have not found the best way to use the grip, but I suspect part of the problem is that I have big hands. When paying out the line, the radial elements of the side of the reel would occasionally bump my hand. This would probably not happen with a smooth plastic side. However, the steel structure seems very strong which is good.Again, this is not perfect. However, I am overall happy with it.

This unusual-looking kite reel works very well, although it's a little small for my hands. The brake lever isn't going to prevent a really big kite from taking line but for most users it'll be fine. The gloves are OK, pretty thin but they fit my large hands ok so that's a plus. As I mentioned in the title, the lock only has one position. The spoked metal wheel structure leaves the line more exposed so you can easily see how much is left (although with a quarter-mile of line on there I'd be hard-pressed to use a significant fraction of it!). It's a solid piece of equipment and if you're looking to get your first reel this is a very good choice.

I own over 100 kites and at least 20 different winders. This is my first try at this particular style with the metal frame with interior plastic parts. It is well constructed.I do like how it has a brake that can slow the outfeed of line without using your gloved hand to slow the outtake.BUT, the LOCK for the whole reel is a tiny piece of plastic and goes about 1/4" into another piece of plastic.ALAS, this is a total fail. No way this will hold up over time, IMO.I also have a HUGE complaint that there is NO, ZERO, NADA information regarding the 'pound test rating' of the included line. How can I trust this line or have any idea as to what kites it will support? As a result, it can only be trusted with the smallest of kites, like small parafoils and small deltas, etc.For the money, my recommendation is: Do Not Buy.

This is the solidest reel I own. It is totaly made of metal and super sturdy. It comes with plenty of line for letting the kite out to full extention. This may be one of the nicest reels on amazon in my opinion.

Obscure fact about me: I love flying kites. I have many bespoke kites and lots of line, spools, and line laundry for my single-line kites. I mostly use the one-piece plastic spools to fly single-line kites as I feel most of the ones with the bearing feel cheap and flimsy. This one, however, does not. This puppy is solid! I like the metal spool that the line winds on and love the brake lever on it. The reel doesn’t have all the give and play that the cheap plastic ones do; it’s actually solid. I like that it comes with a set of gloves in case you don’t already have kite-flying gloves. I believe they are a men’s size large. They give you plenty of string as well. Overall, I’m very happy with this kite line reel. I would recommend it and purchase it in the future. Not sure if its worth mentioning, I’m a leftie and it works great for me :)

I'm using this high quality with brake functions for my personal use while flying kits with family on a beach on in parks. I am highly satisfied with its overall performance and functionality. I feel that the price is reasonable for the product I received. Makes flying kits easier. The kits can be stopped easily and quickly.

I have several of these mostly made from plastic. I find they work well, specially when you either have a large kite or you let the kit out to several hundred feet. Retrieving a kite in high windows or for a long time is cumbersome with a standard string holder. I also find it easy to lock the string stake these into the ground for auto flying.I have one other winder made from metal and find it to be far superior. This one is a higher quality than all my other plastic winders. Everything works well including the brake. This particular winder is a little on the small size so it may be difficult to use by anyone with larger hands.
