Edited: wanted to add a pic and update. We ordered and received ants, too many ants according to directions. There is no way to separate so they all wnnt in. They've been going strong for almost 3 months, but I think we are closing in on the end. Only 6 remain. Cool looking up and learning about ant graveyards. One piece of advice,, remember to give them air daily,, and if there are many, give air oftentimes! This is the 3rd time we've purchased this and every time it's been great. Bought it probably 12 years ago for my son, bought last year for our nephew, and finally bought one for my husband and I. We have never had any of the issues others have spoken of. One person complained the ants didn't have food or water so they obviously didn't read the instructions or what the gel is for. Another said there were issues getting the ants alive and there are specific instructions for that too. The only difference I see this time is they sent too many ants and I believe that is necessitating that I open the oxygen hole more often. This is so much fun to watch and the little ones, my 20 somethings, and even my parents are getting a kick out of this. I highly recommend!

15 years ago I bought a similar ant habitat for my son. It was a hit then and now it is a hit for my 5 1/2 yr old niece. We ordered ants and they arrived a few days before Christmas. They are purchased separately. There was only one casualty and the crew took care of him. They are busy starting their tunnels. It took a few days to see some progress. This kit is super easy. Poke a few holes in the gel. Drop the ants in through the circular hole, put the plug in and watch them work. It comes with a little magnifying glass. You do not have to add anything or open the enclosure. The ants eat the gel. I highly recommend as escape artists are rare to impossible unless u open the lid. This habitat has an led light which makes it fun to watch at night.

Nice product and my two grandkids love it. Unfortunately, the ants don’t last too long.

This seemed like a great idea and my ant loving kids were excited about being able to see their ants through the gel digging tunnels. However, 3 weeks later and the ants still won’t tunnel. Initially, we made 4 starter holes. After a week of no tunneling and watching the ants constantly trip over the holes, I decided to scrape off the dry/hard top layer of the gel thinking it would help them realize it was soft enough to bite through. Nope, that didn’t help either. 3 weeks later and we are down to 4 tough ants because the others wouldn’t tunnel or eat the gel. I started feeding the ants like normal (not our first farm) and watering them and these last few have hung on. I bought the Milton’s giant ant farm with new ants that are tunneling happily away, but since ant colonies don’t mix, I’m going to buy another small Milton farm for the last 4 ants left of the gel farm. Don’t buy this product. The giant Milton’s farm is the best ant farm I’ve bought to date.

My 5 yr old grandson loved watching the ants moving the tiny sand granules from one chamber to another. Super educational!

Updated my review: Had a problem with the lights upon arrival and the company sent a replacement. It arrived days later and works great. It’s beautiful, the ants love it, and so does my family. Excellent customer service. By far, easiest replacment I’ve ever had. Well done! Thanks!Anyone know how to contact seller? My lights do not work. Unfortunately I ordered ants at same time and already put them in before plugging it in. Trying to see how to get replacement lights.

So, the ants only dug for maybe a week. The ants are supposed to eat the gel- they don't (and maybe it's because they are hungry, or can't find food they stop digging, they only dig to bury ants after awhile). The instructions say not to put in sun, allow some air in, do not feed etc...Well once most the ants died I put the farm directly in sun, gave food and would take the top off so it wouldn't condensation too bad and the ants almost immediately started doing better, but they were too weak by that point. I would not suggest this gel ant farm and I would get a dirt ant farm....(Also it does not come with ants just in case you were expecting them, that's an additional 5-15 dollars depending where you order).

Arrived fast, kids loved it, but didn’t realize that you shouldn’t order two vials of ants for the same farm! Started with 50 ants - now we have 3! They fought to the death. Now it looks more like an ant graveyard than a thriving ant farm! Turned out to be a better lesson in the importance of conflict resolution than typical ant behavior.

This ant farm is actually terrible. It looks good, especially with the light on, but I purchased a queen and about 20 workers, and they never dug a hole, the queen stayed on the surface and they all died within a week. the ants would occasionally enter tunnels that I started for them, but never dug any deeper.
