Had a problem with a newly (professionally) installed Cat6 Cable. I thought it was a bad terminal connector - but wanted to test it myself before complaining. This tester low cost and cheaply made - like tools you get at Harbor Freight; however it does exactly what was needed - graphically illustrating which, if any, wires in your cable are out of order.Yes, the instructions are in bad chinglish, but it's just common sense - the tester with the 9V battery generates a current in each wire sequentially ( i.e. 1 through 8), and the receiver lights up if the circuit is complete. If all is well, the receiver also lights-up in sequence (1-8).

This is a great little LAN/Ethernet cable tester for the money. It does feel a little bit "cheap," but that isn't a big deal. What matters is that it works. You have two ways to power it: You can use (1) 9v battery, or you can plug in a micro USB cable to the main part of the tester. Make sure you use a 9v battery that has a good charge. I installed one that wasn't fully charged and the tester didn't work (the little LED light worked fine, but it didn't have enough power to run the tester). The LED light isn't bright, but I suppose it would be a little useful if you were in a room with no light and were in a bind. I also like the fact that you can separate the two pieces or connect them together. Don't bother with the instructions as they are written in poor English and are for a different model tester. If you're just looking for a cheap cable tester that works, this is the right one for you.

I hate terminating ethernet jacks. I’m not sure if it’s the tiny wires or the fact that I always seem to get them mixed up, but it’s never a fun experience. That’s why I was so happy to find this cheap cable tester. It saved me hours of troubleshooting down the line by showing me where I had reversed wires because I couldn’t see the colors on the wires properly. It’s easy to use and understand, and caught all of my mistakes

It came with instructions for testing HDMI cables. It is not an HDMI cable tester. It's an RJ45 & RJ11 cable tester!Am using the broken English in the Amazon online product description to reverse engineer the instructions. Sheesh! Here ya go... 90% there...This cable tester cannot test any electrified product.A 9V battery is used in this tester.Change the battery if any weak light appears.Or the tester can be powered by a micro USB plug. The tester has no internal rechargeable battery. Please use quality tools to press the connector plugs onto the cables.Testing cannot be done while RJ45 copper contacts are not pressed into the plug.Any rules not followed may lead to permanent damage of the jacks in the tester.Functions:Can test Ethernet 8 conductor twisted pair cables 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and G. Can test wrong connection, short circuit, and open circuit. Can also test 4 conductor RJ11 telephone cables.Put the cable's plugs into both the main tester and the remote tester. To test cables, switch ON the power. S does a slower automatic signal test. The lights of the main tester will turn on sequentially from 1 to G.RJ45:Main Tester: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-GRemote Tester: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-GRJ12:Main Tester: 1-2-3-4-5-6Remote Tester: 1-2-3-4-5-6RJ11:Main Tester: 2-3-4-5Remote Tester: 2-3-4-5If you are testing patch panels or wall plate outlets, two cables that match each other (eg RJ45) must be connected to the tester.Following are abnormal connections and indicators:1. If one cable is not connected, for example cable No.3 is open circuited, the two No 3 lights of the main tester and remote tester will not turn on.2. If several cables are not connected, several lights will not turn on respectively.3. If less than two cables are connected, none of the lights will turn on.4. If two ends of a cable are connected in the wrong order, for example NO.2 and No.4 than.Displays on:Main Tester: 1-4-3-2-5-6-7-8-GRemote Tester: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-G(I stopped/gave-up rewriting here)5. If two cables are short circuited, neither of the corresponding major is on of the remote tester while main tester remains unchanged.6. If three cables, including three, are short circuited, none of the corresponding lights will turn on.

First the positive - I find this very inexpensive unit a brilliant and easy way to test a cable I'm adding plugs to - where I have both ends of the cable in the same location. I can see each of the 8 lines being put under load and I can see on each end which wire lights up and hence it will be clear where disconnects or miswires are. Compared to my old tester where pairs are just highlighted it's clear which wire is the issue - of course it's not clear what end the issue is at - but for $8 you don't get a lot.Cons - this cannot and should not be used if you're dealing with wires in a wall. You need to see both units to see what's going on. The manual is chinglish but worse, it's for a different unit. This unit has a slide button - off, on and $. Well, the $ isn't mention it just seems to slow down the charge sequence. The manual talks about holding down buttons for 3, 5 or more seconds - it's a simple slider you cannot hold anything down! All I see is a sequential light going from pin 1 to pin 8 and if connected to the secondary unit, it lights up where the wire gets the charge - they should match. There's no OK/GOOD light, no beeps as the manual claims - no nothing. But it's really simple to use so well, does it really matter?I have to laugh at the little "helper led light" on this unit. It has less light than my cell phone has even without the flash-light feature! All in all - I had very low expectations and they were met. It's what I need when creating completely new cables but I'll still need a real tester for all other wire work.

It's not the most robust piece of kit, but perfect for home or small business use.Works just fine, and with two speeds it suits me.It diagnosed my network issue first-time, and enabled me to approach a professional with full information regarding the fault.

It's not going to win any awards, and it is the standard "watch the lights" type of device, but it gets the job done if you're testing wire pairs. The plastic feels cheap, like a toy, so I am not sure how durable it is. A bonus is that not only does it take the standard 9V battery, but it also has a backup way to power it - A micros-USB connection. So if you run out of battery power, or are like me and constantly forget to buy the batteries to begin with, then you at least have another option.
