I received a new, digital replacement cable box from my provider. When I attempted to install it, I continually received a "no signal" message. I thought that strange since this new box was replacing an older model on the same connection that had stopped working. Then, I wondered if something was wrong with the cable/wall box connection (perhaps the reason the older one stopped working). So, I wanted to test/verify that I was receiving a signal from the cable connected at the wall outlet. Hence, this useful and great (as demonstrated) little device. I used it 15 minutes after I received it and yes it did detect a signal traveling over the cable from the wall outlet. Therefore, not the cable and another defective set top box from my provider. Off to them to get another replacement of the first replacement. I should charge them milage.

This little, inexpensive device works exactly as advertised. I have been able to troubleshoot my various cable connections in every room if my house. Only takes about 5 seconds and you're done. I would recommend this to all my friends.

Seems to work well enough for around the house use.

I have about 10 coax cables coming in to a closet in my house. I needed to determine which one was carrying the internet service. The tester identified the right cable. I hooked up all the equipment and it all worked perfectly. Simple. And I didn't have to waste the time and expense for a tech visit. --Nothing against tech visits. But it just wasn't necessary. It's an older house and previous owners had all had telephone, dsl, and cable service at one time or another through the various local companies.

It does what it says. The light is a little dim and it feels a little cheap, but I got this for a job and it's probably saved me a couple hours on that one job.It did what you would expect it to, and in a 3 story house on its 3rd generation of poorly ran coax, you can see why this may be really useful when suddenly half the house jacks don't work.Well, they didn't because the provider had two seperate lines running to the house for some reason (well actually I see their mistake but its a long irrelevant story), their only supposed to have one. They ran to two splitters and divided up the jacks. When time came to reassign the old line that wasn't supposed to be for them, they lost have their jacks, and this helped figure that out.But where it really saved time was with the far room. There was a 5 way splitter near it, but we only knew of the one connection. Basically the cables where all good, the splitter was good, but those cables with that splitter I guess was just enough for the signal to not be strong enough to reach, and this showed that. Green when I ran the cable straight, red if i put in the splitter, but each port on the splitter was green in the first (and last) test. Ended up just bypassing it because we suspected all the other lines on it where just cut lines anyway.Using a simple tester I saw the splitter and cables where good, if it wasn't for the signal tester I'm sure it would have taken me a while longer to realize what was going on.

Nice gadget but flimsy. Simple to use, closing battery compartment is delicate work, other than that it confirmed to me what I already expected in that cable outlets in my rooms were not connected. I chose this over the other type that requires you to connect transmitters on one end and the reader at the other end... in other words I didn't have to climb up into the attic with this device.... until I have to climb up into the attic to fix the no working connections? Ugh!

The Hitron DSS-01 coax tester is semi useful. But the way that Hitron presents it and packages it along with DOCSIS 3.1 modems is sort of misleading. For one thing it only ranges out to 1 Ghz. That's maybe enough for older DOCSIS 3.0 modems. But the DOCSIS 3.1 spectrum runs out to over 1200 Mhz. The DSS-01 is semi useful in that it will detect gross conditions like a line being shorted out or unusable but it will not detect more nuanced problems like poor spectrum or lack of OFDM. It won't do what Hitron suggests it will when packaged with DOCSIS 3.1 modems. IT IS USELESS FOR DETERMINING IF A COAX IS SUPPLYING A OFDM DOCSIS 3.1 SIGNAL AT THE PROPER POWER AND FULL FREQUENCY SPECTRUM. On my system I had a chronic problem with DOCSIS 3.1 modems defaulting back to DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding. The DSS-01 was able to detect a gross problem like a shorted F-connector. But after it gave the line a passing grade the line still had a spectrum that fell off the cliff above 800 Mhz and would not make an OFDM DOCSIS 3.1 connection. So, if you want to find out if you have a signal, at all, this may be useful. But for verifying if your line is compliant with and delivering a good DOCSIS 3.1 signal, not really.

It’s easy to use, and a handy cable tool.
