About this item

  • Half-round rasp for aggressive removal of wood or soft materials in cabinetry
  • File has narrow width that tapers to a point to ease access into holes and grooves
  • Single-cut teeth on edges for smoothing
  • American pattern file for non-precision material removal
  • Tang for use with an optional handle (sold separately)

The Nicholson pattern maker's cabinet rasp file has a half-round shape with medium American pattern rasp-cut teeth for aggressive removal of wood or soft materials in holes, curves, and corners in cabinet making. The file tapers toward the point in width to ease access into holes and grooves. The rasp's density of six or more rows of teeth per inch provides a smoother finish than regular cabinet rasps. It has medium, single-cut American pattern teeth on the edges for smoothing with a medium-smooth finish. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately).

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

I used to do furniture finishing and repair, this rasp is my go to for all shaping of woods. Its expensive but used properly lasts for years and years, mine got borrowed and went missing, now I say buy your own don't ask to borrow mine. Great purchase.

Poor poor quality--honestly broke in two the very first time my husband used it; luckily it was within Amazon's 30 day return period. I do not recommend this--look at Narex brand instead!

So I'm a little skeptical about the honesty of who's selling this. Seems to me they're selling a bad batch at a discount price but not admitting the defect (both of them are bent at the tip where the metal was sheared). Perhaps my judgement of their honesty just reflects on my distrust; maybe they're not doing it intentionally. The teeth have a good bite to them though so I think it would be a good rasp if it wasn't bent.

These are great rasps and are the standard in woodworking for rasps. Many classes, books and forums recommend these rasps. Their quality has slipped some in recent years, as the manufacturing has changed countries from US & Switzerland, to Mexico and Brazil. They aren't as good, in my opinion, as say, an Ariou, handmade in France. But that's comparing two very different price points. Still, I would like to have seen the quality that they used to be known for not too many years ago. It's a shame that more and more companies are sending their manufacturing overseas where corner cutting inevitably happens. Still, it isn't a bad rasp, and will suit most people. Amazon's prices are also excellent, beating all the woodworking catalogs that I get.In short, recommended, but if you are used to the quality of older Nicholson rasps and files, you will be slightly disappointed.

Great for filing very hard wood down to a smooth surface. I used it to remove surface marks on unfinished Rosewood caused by planing.

I own a USA made Nicholson rasp that has been carving hundreds of hardwood items and got somewhat dull, but this brand new rasp made in brazil is duller out of the box. The teeth are uneven and the whole thing just feels cheap. It came wrapped in plain cardboard (no branded package?) I'm returning it and saving my money for a serious rasp.
