In our house, the alliums (garlic, onions, shallots) seem to get mushy and sprout way sooner than we can use them all. That's not to say that we don't use a lot of garlic in our food, we can't get enough of the stuff. It's probably due to the way we store them. We put them in little metal baskets on top of our kitchen island. With the kitchen lights shining on them from above and a basket of ripening fruit nearby, they're getting a double whammy of light and ethylene gas.That's where this cool little metal jar comes in. We can put all of our garlic in there and it will be kept dark and cool, with limited air circulation (though it does have holes in the bottom to keep them from getting too moist. Moreover, it looks really cute and it's labeled clearly. I really like it. It will take some time before I know for sure how much it helps keep the garlic fresh, but I have no doubt it's a better storage solution than our previous situation.Now if only they made really large jars for onions...

This is a huge improvement over the bowl that I kept on the counter for the garlic. Now I know that it is going to be stored properly, and that it looks attractive at the same time. Win win!
