An excellent tool. I have three older MG's (2 TC's and an MGA) and perform most of my own engine work - rebuilding heads is one of them. I have a different spring compressor that I've used in the past but recently used one of these that friend had...and what a difference. Replacing 8 valves, springs, o-rings and keepers used to take me over an hour, most of which was spent fighting to get the keepers in place over the o-ring - using this spring compressor I did it in 20 minutes with absolutely no problems. I was able to set it up once and use it for all 8 valves, rather than re-set it for each valve as I'd had to do in the past.I disregarded the negative review on this spring compressor and bought one knowing that if it were indeed cheaply made I could return it easily enough via Amazon. I have no idea why the 1-star complainer said that it was weak and flimsy unless he was working with valve springs on a hydraulic engine which require much more spring pressure than a gas engine. The springs I'm using in my heads are from a Chevy LS-1 head and have a closed seat pressure of 170 lbs, 280 lbs open and there was NO indication that this compressor couldn't handle the job.

Worked well on flathead valve springs!

I bought a used one. The attachments were bent and one was cracked. I've used a few different types over the years. Most are good, none are great. To avoid the hassle of returning it and ordering a new one, which will most likely bend as well I'll weld my own attachments. The clamp tool itself is more than adequate. The attachments are the week link. I'm not a pro so don't need to spend too much on a tool used every decade or so. Anyway, it is a decent tool for under a hundred bucks. Buy new. Not used. 😒

Waited a week for the tool to show up to rebuild a set of 305sbc heads. Tried both adapters and they bent under no pressure at all, followed directions also. Save your money and run as fast as you can away from this tool. For lawnmower springs it might work but other than that it’s only good use is being thrown into the garbage…Oh and by the way I couldn’t even get one valve done with this tool before it bent beyond repair.

This compressor is not very sturdy, and the force needed to pull the lever down and compress springs is laughably hard. It just doesn't have the proper handle for leverage to do big jobs well, and the piviot point has too much friction. This tool is not a high duty cycle tool at all. I used it on the 3v 5.4l heads and after 3 springs the retaining arms bent out of shape and I didn't even apply that much force. Granted the 3v springs are a bit more stout than let's say a lawnmower, I expected to get one complete job out of this tool. So lessons learned there, there is no substitution for forged tools. Now however I did find this is a perfect tool to compress and remove the piston actuators out of a 4r75w transmission since the jaws are huge. So that's what it does now - light spring compression.

Its a little awkward to use as the head has to be on its side but it is good quality and works good.

Somewhat easy to use. A bit cumbersome but does the job.Adding oil to all the joints helps a lot
