About this item

  • Unique design to support the end of your penturning mandrel
  • Provides no pressure on the tailstock end of the mandrel shaft thus eliminating any bending or vibration
  • There is no longer a need for spacer bushings
  • Will work with all mandrels with a diameter of 0. 245" or less
  • Compatible with lathes that accept #2MT accessories in tailstock

Are you tired of bending your Mandrel and ruining the point on your live center? If so, then this fail-safe live center accessory is for you. Mandrels usually bend when you tighten the tailstock center point into the end indentation of your mandrel shaft. This system solves that problem because your mandrel shaft goes through the hollow live center, and rides on a presision bearing. Your bushings sit against the center with zero pressure on the mandrel shaft. The pen tube and bushing assembly tightens up by turning your tailstock quill adjustment wheel. Great for beginners and students. Unique design to support the end of your mandrel. Provides no pressure on the mandrel thus eliminating any bending and vibration. There is no longer a need for spacer bushings. The live center is now obsolete. Will work with all mandrels with a diameter of 0.245-Inch or less.

I turn pens and mechanical pencils of wood and acrylic on my wood lathe. I utilize a mandrel for this. With this live tail stock mandrel I am able to do exactly what the name says. If you do not have one of these, you have to turn your projects using a pointed live center pushed into your mandrel! This will at least wear out your mandrel quicker and if you push that too hard, you will get an out of round turn on your projects! It spins smoothly and very quietly, so I assume the bearings are of excellent quality!I highly recommend this product! Thanks PSI!

If you are a pen turner, this is a must have for your turnings! The mandrel saver eliminates the issue of bending your mandrel if you are applying too much pressure when you are using friction polish and any other process you use to finish your pens. So much better then the brass fitting and a live center. I have turned pens with both and will not turn them without the mandrel saver now. Great product. Very happy with it.

Does what it states it will, however... only 4 stars instead of 5 because of 2 reasons:1) it's not a required item. it's a specific luxury. Given as long as you use caution to tighten everything, you will never bend your mandrel, so this isn't really required.2) This one has such a puny bearing in it that it almost sounds like it's going out even having just bought it. I know there is a European version of this center that is exactly the same but they used a beefy bearing instead of the cheap 2cent one found here.Overall it is a good center and has it's purpose but I only award it 4 stars this time.

for pen turners, works great. Look for the one that the head looks like a one piece vs the two piece. Saves Mandrel like the title says. Also convenient when you are doing pens like Wall Streets, Accords, Lever Action, Bolt Action and other single blank pens where you would normally need spacers. The mandrel bar is easy to bend, I'll start using them in the pen turning classes I teach.

In a word, Amazing! I had been turning pens since I was in highschool and always had trouble with putting too much pressure on the mandrel from a live center or from using a drill chuck. The mandrel saver is really a life saver here. Its super easy to set up and perfectly centered every time. I had not turned a pen in years and it was easily the truest pen I have ever turned. Well worth the cost. I slapped this thing on the Harbor Freight mini lathe and it turns like butter. Slide the tailstock until it touches the spacers, snug up the tailstock and give the feed a bit of tension and it runs true. I tuned 1in plus blanks with no slippage even when really hoging into the blank.

Where to start? I agree with the other 5-star reviews, this thing is a must-have for pen turning, it removes the need for the end nut and it completely eliminates mandrel wobble. I could go on and on but I'd just be repeating what others have already said. In short, it was totally worth the money and I wish I purchased this much sooner, it would've saved me a TON of frustration when I started turning-n-learning :)

I found the bearings in this live centre to be excellent and the extra support prevents excess stress on the mandrel rod which could cause bending of the pen mandrel. I bought one for my son as well and it's the only live centre we use in pen making. Excellent invention.

I had a different mandrel saver but it didn't seem to keep the mandrel perfectly lined up. This one does a great job with no wobble.
