The Do It All Dock

A “do-it-all” dock, the Thunderbolt Certified TBT4-UD5 Plugable Docking Station was awarded The Best Thunderbolt Docking Station by Tom’s Guide (Tom's Guide, July 23rd, 2024), as well as verified for the Intel Engineered for Evo program. It stands out as a versatile and powerful hub for modern workspaces. Its robust design includes an array of 13 ports, catering to a wide range of connectivity needs.

Starting with the 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 host port, this HDMI docking station offers plenty of bandwidth to support two HDMI ports, each capable of driving dual 4K 60Hz displays. A downstream 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 port is also included to provide high-speed connectivity for advanced Thunderbolt-based applications, such as fast storage devices. Use it to alternatively charge your phone or tablet with up to 15W of power or power an external display such as a USB-C monitor at up to 8K.

In addition to Thunderbolt 4 to HDMI display options, the TBT4-UD5 boasts a USB-C port with a 10Gbps transfer rate, ideal for quick file transfers and efficient data management. There are also 4x USB ports (2x 10Gbps, 2x 5Gbps), perfect for connecting a variety of peripherals like keyboards, mice, and external drives. Throw in SD and Micro SD slots, a combo audio jack, Gigabit Ethernet, and a slot for a K lock, and this setup ensures that users can create a powerful and integrated workstation.

Speaking of power, the TBT4-UD5 Thunderbolt and USB4 dock packs it in with up to 100W Power Delivery (96W certified) — more than enough for most power-hungry laptops. Especially useful in business and education environments, the Plugable TBT4-UD5 Docking Station delivers exceptional functionality and convenience.

It’s worth noting on Mac systems, dual display is only supported on M1 Pro/Max, M2 Pro/Max, M3 Pro/Max, and base model M4/Pro/Max systems. Base model M1, M2, and M3 systems will only support one extended display.

Compatibility

System Requirements Host computer with a built-in Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 port running Windows 10 and later or macOS 11 and later.
Drivers Typically no driver installation is necessary on the host computer in order to use the TBT4-UD5. On Windows, it may be necessary to manually install an Ethernet adapter driver to ensure the best performance.
Mac Configuration Apple Mac systems with an Apple processor must have an M1 Pro/M1 Max, M2 Pro/M2 Max, M3 Pro/M3 Max, Base M4, M4 Pro, M4 Max processor in order to use dual displays. Base M1, M2, or M3 Macs only support a single display.
Display Capabilities The TBT4-UD5 has two built-in HDMI video outputs each supporting up to a maximum 4K resolution at up to a maximum 60Hz refresh rate. Dual display capability is dependent on the host system’s external display capability. Up to 8K video is supported via downstream front Thunderbolt port (total maximum of two displays possible).
  • Yes, with important qualifications. Macs with ‘base’ M1, M2, or M3 processors will support only one external display. Macs with M1 Pro, M1 Max, M2 Pro, M2 Max, M3 Pro, and M3 Max, Base M4, M4 Pro, M4 Max processors will support two external displays.

  • A computer that has a Thunderbolt 4 port or USB4 port that is running Windows 10 or later or macOS 11 or later should be compatible with the Plugable TBT4-UD5 docking station. Computers that do not meet these requirements are not supported.

  • Downstream Thunderbolt ports provide maximum flexibility of the devices that can be used. If the host has a Thunderbolt 4 port, then the downstream Thunderbolt port will work as a Thunderbolt 4 port; allowing Thunderbolt 4, 3 and USB-C connections.

  • No software or driver installation is necessary in order to use the TBT4-UD5.

  • HDMI monitors are supported at up to a maximum of 4K 60Hz. For monitors with USB-C ports, up to a single 8K display can be connected via the front Thunderbolt port. Note, a total maximum of two displays can only be connected at a single time.

Great little docking station. For the money it works well and have had little trouble with it --i will say that it was difficult to find any user manual/instructions (for those of us who don't know --host=computer) --that took me a while to figure out. Other than the lack of an easy to find introduction on how to actually plug things into the dock, it's great!

About this dock,I find it a good value. No external dongles needed for HDMI connectivity.96/100w charging.Ethernet.Long story for those fighting with docks...So I'm up to 3 Docks I tried, and until this morning, none of them worked correctly. My the laptop maker tech support said, yup need to use the TB4 port for it to work.If not working, call the makers of the dock.I sent back the first one (from another company), factory tech support said, either not compatible, or broken, we aren't sure.only 1 monitor, ethernet would constantly disconnect. No charging. So back it went.Others had the same complaints, so figure, get a refund and move on.So bought the TBT4-UD5 from Plugable from amazon. My laptop "maker" sent me the graphics of where the TB4 port was/which one, and no it didn't work correctly.Only 1 monitor, but ethernet did, charging didn't.Updating drivers, new cable, nothing worked. After sitting back, I finally tried the USB-C 3.2 port that is not s/b to work (according to my laptop "maker").But it did. Called my Laptop "maker", and finally the one tech support worker sent me the motherboard manual, and my laptop "maker's" info of what port is which and what did what was WRONG!What they called TB4 port, was really the USB-C 3.2 for power and for 1 display.port.Which did gave me ethernet and 1 monitor via the dock.Plugged the TBT4-UD5 into the real TB4 port, what the laptop maker called the USB-C 3.2 for data use, no power... gave me the 2 displays the dock promised, ethernet and charging !.. I was happy about the 2 displays and ethernet... charging too was a bonus. (I was originally told by my maker, ok, so it's not, to be expected with powerful laptops.)In the middle of banging my head against the desk, I bought a "lesser" model from plugable from amazon, USB4-HUB3A , it now works too.Plugable tried to help me, no one questioned the port, I shared the laptop company's port designation. So not their fault. Plugable tried a few things, one reason I bought the lower cost dock of there, get another one of their OEM TB4 cables which was suspect. So lesson is, if its not working, really have to dive deep into the ports and what they do, and which one is which.

I had an M2 Mac Mini. It's in a Minisopuru USB C dock that provides an NVME SSD (2TB). Plus Micro and regular SD Card slots, a USB-A and USB-Port. The Mini has two USB A ports, and two Thunderbolt/USB C ports. You'd think that would be enough? Not so fast. I prefer wired keyboards and mice. Two ports. A multi function printer/scanner. Up to three. And then there's the USB C Pebble 3 speakers. To add another HDMI display I added another USB C hub.The displays went flaky, though they did work (mostly). The speakers didn't seem to be getting enough power. The Samsung Shield T7 went in and out.I have a similar setup on my desk at work with a new M4 Mini but no Minisopuru dock. There the Mini seems to have feed enough power to drive the attached accessories.Enter this Plugable Thunderbolt Dock which arrived yesterday. My M2 dual displays are no solid. I can plug and unplug the Shield T7 2 TB SSD and it stays connected. The Pebble V3 speakers are happy. So this Thunderbolt dock seems to be solution to the problem - and the problem is Apple simply skimps out on ports. Remember that 12" MacBook which had ONE USB-C Port? My new MacBook Air has just two, but at least a MagSafe power connection point. Buy an Apple and you're likely going to be in the connection accessory market.24 hours is not a fair time to review a product. From other reviews, I'm hoping this Plugable continues to work as it is doing now - certainly the price was reasonable compared to others. Still, reasonable is in the eyes of the beholder. New M4 Mac Mini right now on Amazon? $579. This dock is 35% of its cost.Note the photo I included. I keep the lights low to avoid monitor glare and with this black dock and stylish black ports under my monitor, I have to use the flashlight on my phone to find the USB C port into which I'm plugging that external T7 SSD. This black on black design style isn't unique to Plugable, but if I could change it I would. The other surprise is that with a 31" monitor and 27" second in rotated (vertical) mode the right, my Mini is behind the main monitor. The Plugable Dock fits nicely within the monitor stand. It would be great, except the TB 4 port that feeds into the dock from the computer is on the FRONT of the dock. See image. That makes some sense for connecting a laptop, but I think even then the dock and all its connected peripherals will be a more or less permanent fixture on the user's desktop, so even with a laptop the "host" port on the back would be accessible more esthetic. And less likely to suffer from bending, crimping, and wear.

This dock is performing wonderfully for me. When I connect my MSI GS75 laptop to the dock on my desk I have access to 1 or 2 large monitors with the desktop extended across all monitors including my laptop screen, and I can use my higher quality mouse and keyboard as well as a couple of high capacity external SSDs. When my laptop connects to the dock it also seamlessly switches to the dock's ethernet network interface - while connected, my laptop WIFI interface remains on but disconnected from the network until I disconnect from the dock. Great product. Highly recommend.

The first unit I received had been previously opened had minor damage, most probably because I received a previously opened box from Amazon. I reported the issue to Plugable which responded within the hour saying that they would ship me a new unit to replace it. I received the unit on the next day.Installed the dock and it worked right away with two 4K monitors, a wired GigE connection, a streaming camera and many other USB connection, both USB 3.0 and USB2.0 with no issue at all. I use two different laptop with that dock, a MSI and a Lenovo device and they both work great. OS is Windows 11 and both Laptop have Intel CPU (Ultra core 7 and i7) with the integrated ARC GPU. I guess it probably helps to make sure the latest driver are installed (the one from Intel directly, not the one comming with a manufacturer/Windows install) and to make sure the laptop supports Thunderbolt 4.I previously had tried these setup with lower cost USB-C 2.0 dock devices but always had problem, especially trying to get two 4K display working. At best, I was only getting one display to work in 4K and the USB bandwidth was greatly affected (forget fluid video streaming from the webcam!). No an issue with this unit.As far as durability is concerned, it is hard to tell after only a couple of days of usage. I can say that it look sturdy and very well built. I don't think there should be an issue on that side but only time will tell!Others reported the unit as becoming hot. On my side I can say that yes it heats up but nothing out of the ordinary, especially with a unit running at that speed and providing 96W.

Plugable TBT4-UD5 Thunderbolt 4 Dock.Got a new laptop with two ThunderBolt4 (TB4, aka. USB4) ports. So, went hunting for a dock to take full advantage. The field is very limited though, and this one seems the best, better even than the "big brother" of it from Plugable. This was the only dock I found that had another Thunderbolt port (on the front, even!) for peripherals. As well as a pair of 5gbs USB3 ports on front, and several 10gbs ports on the rear. Seems to be a great dock and is working well here.My only(!) complaint is the dumb front-mounted port for the laptop cable. Lots of other docks make the same mistake, dunno why? It belongs at the REAR, guys!! Docking one star for that silliness, otherwise all quite good!Note that the Kingston AD2010T4 dock appears to be exactly the same thing as this one.
