Purchased for my daughter’s violin. Very good sound and very good quality. Easy to put on, fits great, super easy to take on and off while playing. Also very beautiful! Definitely recommend!

Wow, while I haven't had the pleasure of trying out that many mutes, I figured to pick this one up given that it looks nice & and has great reviews. I can tell you this, this mute deserves all the praise. It's well constructed, does not feel cheap, looks fancy compared to other mutes out there, and muted my 15.5" viola just enough and didn't hinder the tone at all. Before my viola was quite harsh sounding, but with this mute, it's toned it down enough to make it more bearable when practicing, and actually made it sound a bit better! While it is one of the more expensive options, I can't complain for $20. Would absolutely buy it again in case it decides to walk off my viola into the abis.

After various experiments with other mutes, which were either too bulky, had to be completely removed from the instrument, or jiggled around vibrating when not on the bridge, I acquired a Shield mute as a student at Manhattan School of Music in the 1980s. It went with me to Poland, to Stanford, went on tour all over Europe, to the University of Miami, and generally speaking, lived a good long productive life. It alternated between being on my violin (usually when orchestra repertoire demanded it) and keeping my rosin and extra strings company in my case. And then I became an Engineer and it lived in darkness for some time.Years passed, and my daughter stared at her Youth Symphony music and asked in her squeaky Dora voice, “Mommy, what does con sordino mean?” I knew then that it was time to bring my Shield out of the darkness and to pass it down to a new violinist. Her little fingers were too small and too weak to get it on and off by herself. So it stayed on until after the orchestra concert at the end of the semester. It wasn’t needed any more, so we put it away into her case. Alas, the next time the Youth Symphony music demanded ‘con sordino’, we searched everywhere in the case, and the mute was nowhere to be found. After going through all the stages of grief and finally reaching acceptance, I grabbed my phone and consulted Amazon. 30 years had passed. Could mute technology have changed? Could someone have invented something *gasp* better?Apparently not.Although I choked down my surprise at the change in price since I purchased mine so many years ago, it appeared to be otherwise identical. When it arrived, I did notice that it was much stiffer than what I was used to. But it seemed to do the job.Somehow, during COVID, it mysteriously disappeared again. I reordered another one. This time were are determined to keep it inside of the nice square box it came in.However, I cannot help but wonder if the two missing mutes are hiding somewhere together, keeping their surroundings quiet… At least we can only assume that since they are made of plastic, they are not decomposing…

Its a beautiful mute and works well. The rubber might be rigid at first, requiring some strength to put on quickly, which can lead to slight changes of your string’s pitches. I originally gave this four stars because of that, but the more I used it, the rubber softened and accommodated my bridge. It works perfectly now and gives my viola a sweeter sound.Keep in mind that this is a concert mute used to sweeten your sound and give it a particular quality of color. It is not to used lower your volume for practice and will only decrease it ever so slightly; it’s purpose is to change the color of your instrument.

If you are lucky to fix it in its optimal position to the bridge it gives very good soft sound. The problem is that by design its attachment to the bridge is not stable:The mute may just jump out of the bridge entirely in the middle of playing or just change a bit its attachment - causing change in the sound.I give some chance to my misunderstanding (and for this reason only I did not put less then 3 stars) but I tried my best.At least, I did not have any similar problem with other mutes, for instance, the Heifetz mute - which I really recommend.

Unlike the tourte mutes that you pull up and push down on the bridge, this mute requires you to pull over the bridge to activate and push to take off from the bridge. This horizontal pull/push motion caused my bridge to suddenly fall. The D’Addario Orchestral Spector Violin Mute also requires a horizontal pull-on / push-off motion. Because of that, my old tourte mute is back on my violin. The tourte mute requires you to pull up and push down and won't cause the mute to fall.

It does make the sound very warm and reduce the volume a lot. It is easier to install than the tourte one, and it won't wiggle (like the Tourte does) on the strings while you slide it away from the bridge for temporary no-mute.In terms of volume, it reduces a lot, but still not that powerful than the Artino mute.Volume reduce: Artino > Alpine > TourteIn terms of sound quality, it's way better than a powerful mute.Sound quality: Alpine >≈ Tourte > ArtinoAlthough it will mute the after-length of D & A strings where you leave it on for temporarily no-mute, just like Tourte. I think I would remove it completely while I'm not using it.There is a risk to push the bridge over while you slide it towards the bridge to install it (like Hilary Hahn did), so be careful there. It's overall still the best mute I've used.

It fits on the bridge very well and easily, and the most important is that it gives the right amount of mute down but doesn't degrade the tone color but just making it softer and pretty graceful. I use it everyday for practicing as I felt my violin is too loud in my house for my ears but I don't want a aggressive metal mute at day time and want to keep the color of the tones. This one is the perfect match for my needs. Also the quality and workmanship is great and its shape and color are nice too.

Klingt sehr gut. Klang der Geige bleibt erhalten. Dämpfung ausreichend für die Nachbarn... .

This is simply the best mute I’ve ever had. When I changed my violin, I found the usual Tourte round mute just rattled causing a buzz. This one not only fits onto the strings easily, but popping the mute on and off is the easiest I’ve known. The sound when muted it beautiful, much nicer than the other mutes I’ve tried. It might cost a little more, but it’s absolutely worth the extra money paid!I recommended this to my desk mate, and she was also impressed with the mute.

The best violin mute you can get, except for a bit too pricey.
