I bought this to help retrieve pet snakes from the far reaches of their terrariums. It works perfectly for this. My largest snake is around 5 pounds and the hook handles him very well. It is well made, and is a great size. I liked it so much I got my son one as well.

Very good quality for a small telescoping hook, better by far than the ZooMed small hook. It is not meant for maneuvering larger snakes. I use it with mainly young snakes and adults of smaller species.

Decently sturdy when extended, fits in my tool box of terrarium tools, and small enough to work with my rough greens. The flattened end of the hook is nice, and the tip is rounded for safety. Working well for collecting shy noodles for cleaning day. Would not recommend for herping in nature. Get something sturdier and longer if that’s your need.

This hook is pretty much an old style car or a portable radio antenna with a hook affixed to the distal end. It's stronger than in at first appears, but it's simply not made to hook or pin larger snakes given that it has limited stoutness or strength when cantilevered out after extending the handle/shaft insufficient to hold much torsional weight, and it tends to want to reclose from it's extended configuration when downward pressure is transferred from handle to hook base when it's used to pin snakes of much strength or size. This creates a need for hypervigilence when using it for venomous specimens. This hook is, however, very easy to carry in your pocket (especially the back pocket), with easy access therefrom. I use mine exclusively for the sole two venomous I currently hold - both pygmy rattlesnakes, for obvious reasons. I can readily recommend this for smaller and non-venomous snakes....Pygmys are about the maximum sized venomous snakes I'd be truly comfortable working with using this hook, though I wouldn't summarily preclude it's use on larger venomous snakes if one exercises due diligence and care with their handling, often in a situation where you may be uncomfortable retrieving a more robust hook due to an immediate need to handle. It's also very, very handy for hooking water bowls for removal thereof and other items within venomous cages to move the item to a point for safe reach.Even given the clear weaknesses, I truly love mine and keep it handy at all times in my vivaria areas...and the back pocket is one such storage spot.

It’s sturdy, retractable and great product. However I work in a grocery store and I purchased it to retrieve items from the back of taller shelves. It fits in my apron when closed and saves me from having to get a ladder.

Generally you don’t need to use them, but it will work great with king snakes. Don’t use them on wild snakes because it’s short.

i don’t like that it’s metal. it is freezing cold to the touch and to pick up reptiles like that is almost cruel. i’m sure it’s like putting a ice cube on your snake. i have to heat it up under the heat lamp before i use it. also really small probably only usable for young/ small snakes. i use it for my baby corn snake to weigh her every month. she freaked out the first time i touched her with it i then realized how absolutely freezing it is.
