The sander is as quiet as I need it to be while wearing ear protection, while the amount of lateral movement as it vibrates is not as aggressive as other hand sanders I've used, like it's more fine than it should be. I generally like them to be a little crazier. But there are several things that bug me about the design, including 1) the power button doesn't move that much, so I find myself looking at it to see which way to push it to turn it off as it doesn't stick out far enough. 2) The bracket holding the sheet at the nose is, to me, backwards. Instead of being able to hold the unit by the handle, and actuate the bracket to open it up with a finger, I have to brace the unit with one hand, push down on the bracket with another hand, then remove or insert the sheet with my third hand. Royally irritating. It was while performing this maneuver I discovered 3) the dust cartridge collapses entirely, and without much provocation. It is completely spineless. And if it's full of dust when you accidentally compress it, all that dust shoots right back up into the mechanism. Kind of ironic, considering this is a "Ridgid" product...
