I used it to fix hairline cracks, larger cracks and to coat part of the bottom of a crumbling prefab firebox. See photos. Simple 1 hour maintenance task that you will be glad you did for safety. Not a super neat job but very functional. I did this years ago - worked great - Rutland is great - but it was time for another application (the previous mortar is gray if you can see it) This time I used buff. Should have tried white. Oh well.0- Follow all the instructions on the tube.1- Tools: Vacuum, Caulk gun, 1” putty knife, 6” putty knife. If all you are fixing are cracks, you do not need the 6”. I also recommend a bright light and reading glasses.2- Scrape to loosen all crumbling material then vacuum. Wet the areas to be fixed as it says on the tube.3- Cut the tip small and pierce the inner seal - most caulk guns have a cutter plus a swiveling stick to pierce the inner seal. Then do the narrow cracks first. After caulking the cracks, smooth them with the 1” to press it in better and smooth your work.4- Cut more off of the tip to make a bigger hole. Squeeze out an ample amount onto any deteriorating areas, press into voids and smooth with the 6”. Use the 1” to get excess off and scrape off what sticks to the 6” so you can use/reapply it.5- Easy cleanup by scraping tools against each other to remove excess, get more off with a paper towel and then rubbing with water.

This product is amazing for getting the job done. I had cracks in my fireplace floor and used this product to seal the cracks. It sealed perfectly and was very easy to use. It’s priced fair and the quality is great. The grout looks great and it seems very durable.

This does a great job of repairing mortar in the firebox, just as described in the product details. It isn’t for repairing grout on the face brick, but that is pretty clear. The curing process involves at least a day of air drying (up to 30 days) before lighting a very small fire to dry out the rest of the moisture. Then lighting a longer and hotter fire to totally cure it. Following the instructions are important to prevent bubbling. When following the purpose and instructions, this is one of the best products out there.

Patched cracks in around fireplace. Lot of it flaked off. Good for narrow deep cracks, not so great thicker or surface patches exposed to high heat.

Doesn’t stick very well to firebricks and takes too long to dry. The joints are fairly weak that can be broken with little effort. Only use I see for this product is fill up small cracks.
