I tried the self contained pen style, no power. This capacitor style is the bomb. Just plug it into a 120 outlet and start welding. There was something rolling around inside. I sent an email to customer service and never got a reply. I needed to weld up some battery packs and didn’t want to have to wait for a replacement so I opened it up to find a 6mm bolt that connects the capacitor to the lead had come out. I have insulated tools so I carefully inserted the bolt and tightened it up. Must be very careful as the capacitor has a charge in it from the factory. Once reassembled it works terrific. I would recommend this over any other battery welder.

I am happy to see that this site actually sells products that aren't garbage sometimes. I originally bought a cordless spot welder that was less than half the price of this one and after two years it no longer had enough power to weld even the thinnest nickel strips. So I was kicking myself for buying junk initially and then having to buy another product that also could not work. "Buy once cry once", as they say. But this time I decided to spend a bit more in the hopes of getting something nicer. Since this thing is a plug in unit (and not trash quality) it has plenty of power to weld even thicker than what it advertises. I was welding 0.2mm thick pure nickel strips when it was on the power setting 5/25. At max power I was able to weld utility knife blades together and those are like 0.9-1.0mm thick! I also love the foot switch and the user interface is simple and easy to use.

I have made several hundred welds so far. These are my observations:1. Build quality is good with an all metal case, easy to read display, and heavy gauge probe cables.2. It is easy to use. Only two adjustments, welding pulse duration and time from contact to pulse.3. With a little practice I was able to make consistent strong welds with 1mm and 1.5mm Nickel strips. 2 mm strips are a work in progress. I haven't tried 3mm strips but I am doubtful of consistent results.4. The big problem is that the voltage on the capacitor drops as you make welds. The power supply can't keep up. The cap voltage is shown in the upper left corner of the display. As the voltage drops the welds become noticeably weaker. After doing 15-20 welds I had to stop and wait about a minute for the capacitor voltage to catch up or increase the weld pulse width to compensate. It is my opinion that this unit is great for casual use but inadequate for volume use.5. The probes get very hot after a few dozen uses. Keep the rubber probe sleeves on.6. The 12 volt 3 amp power supply also gets VERY hot after extended use.All in all I like the unit and have made many good quality welds. However, it is only suitable for casual or low volume work. I think for that application it is over priced. There are many other lower cost welders for casual work.

I ordered this after being disappointed by the performance of the handheld “pen†type spot welders thinking the size and added hardware would provide better welding performance. And it did….for the one time I tried it out. After that, it quit working and performed with less power than the handheld unit! Well WTH? Is QA, QC, CQI and anything to do with “Quality†nonexistent in…let’s see, where was this made?…..oh! China! Where the handheld unit went back to. Idk, it’s really hard to say, size? Okay, battery life? N/A, speed? Again, N/A, Design & performance? If only okay for one use to test, then I guess NOT GOOD AND NOT GOOD VALUE FOR THE MONEY! Since you’re paying $169 for three spot welds that you could do with your cars battery for free. I will reach out to the customer “support†links for the promised “good solution†to any problem or issues, and will update this review pending resolution of this matter since I already paid in full, my hard earned $169 so you can know whether or not it’s a good idea to spend YOUR MONEY on this one trick pony. I understand that things happen and bad units can slip through any QA program. But that depends on whether this gets appropriately handled (replace, repair, or refund), or if it gets met with a song & dance (excuses, requests for pics, videos, and information that doesn’t matter &/or accusations of misuse, abuse or other reasons why I must accept this for my $169 after 3 uses in less than 6 months. Granted, it’s now 8 months since I bought it, but it quit working long before now. I just haven’t been able to get to this till now. So stay tuned to find out if customer service is, or not….
