I’m new to woodworking, so I’m very pleased with the quality and the price. I have used numerous times, and I have been pleased with the results. The alignment marks could be a little more distinguishable is my only recommendation. Otherwise, for the price point, definitely a good choice.

This dowel jig design was first marketed by other makers since about the middle of the last century. It’s a great design for a self-centering dowel jig to edge join boards, and is probably the best design ever created for a dowel jig. Most of the parts in this particular version of this jig are of high quality metal. The problem is the sleeves for 3/8” dowels are too thin and flimsy in my opinion, and will not hold up long to drill friction in use. The 3/8” sleeves are just too thin and feel almost plastic. Unfortunately, 3/8” dowels are my most frequently used so I’m not confident in using this jig for that size.

Review of the Self Centering Dowel Jig KitI recently had the pleasure of using the Self Centering Dowel Jig Kit, and I must say, it has quickly become an essential tool in my woodworking arsenal.First and foremost, the construction of the jig is impressive. Made from solid metal, it exudes durability and stability, ensuring that it can withstand the rigors of regular use. You can feel the quality as soon as you take it out of the box—there's no flimsy plastic here, just robust, reliable engineering that promises longevity.Using this dowel jig was a breeze. The self-centering feature works flawlessly, aligning dowel holes perfectly every time. This made the process of drilling equally spaced dowel holes a simple task, eliminating any guesswork and providing professional results in my projects. The six included drill bushings are a significant plus, offering versatility and allowing me to tackle various sizes of dowels without needing additional tools.Adjusting the width for different wood thicknesses is straightforward as well, making this kit suitable for a wide range of applications—from furniture making to repairs. I particularly appreciate how user-friendly this jig is. Even as someone who isn’t a professional woodworker, I found the setup and operation intuitive, leading to a smooth workflow. In terms of value, this kit is certainly worth the investment. Having used numerous doweling jigs over the years, I would confidently say this one stands out for its reliability and effectiveness. I can see myself returning to this tool time and again, especially for projects requiring precision and neat joinery. In summary, if you're looking for a quality self-centering dowel jig that consistently delivers excellent results, I highly recommend this kit. It’s solid, dependable, and performs exactly as intended. I would definitely buy this again and encourage fellow woodworkers to add it to their toolkit. Whether you’re a seasoned craftsman or a weekend hobbyist, this doweling jig will serve you well for years to come.

First, the positive aspects of this self-centering dowel jig. The clamping body of the jig is well machined and solid with no flex or give when clamped down tight. The side screw is strong and allows for a very tight clamp which is important when drilling into hardwood because the torque of the drill bit wanting to twist against the clamp. When drilling into the wood there is absolutely no movement of the jig. Two sets of the threaded insert barrels are included which allows for installing double dowels and is nice to have a backup guide. Now, the negative aspects of the jig. I really wanted to like this kit but there are too many things wrong with it to give it a good review. There are white alignment marks on the sides and end of the center drill guide block. The idea is to draw a line on the face of the board along the centerline of where the dowel is to be placed. When the clamp is placed on the edge of the board, you line up the white guide block marker to your pencil mark, clamp it down tight and the drill guide hole should be perfectly aligned to pencil line. I drilled several test holes using ¼” and 5/16” sizes of the threaded inserts, and all holes 1/32” off from my center line mark. When drilling matching holes for dowels, the error is doubled resulting in the two boards being 1/16” offset. The drill guide markers are only on one side of the jig. As a workaround, the only way I could get the boards to properly line up was to add the pencil centerline to both sides of the board and drill the second matching dowel with the guide marker on the opposite (backside) face. By doing this, the 1/32” error is canceled out.The side drill guide mark on the non-threaded ½” hole is accurate. I was unable to check accuracy on the 7/16” non-threaded hole because the hole is too small and a 7/16” bit would not pass through the guide block. Upon inspection, there is a slight ridge inside the drill guide barrel preventing the bit from passing through. I could only fit a 27/64” bit in the hole.Lastly, and most obvious, is the sloppy machining of not one, but both 3/8” threaded inserts. One was obviously off center with thicker walls on one side of the guide, the other was chewed up as if a drill bit had gotten off course during manufacturing and won’t even drop into the guide block. I don’t trust the 3/8” guides at all, so they are basically useless, especially when considering that the guide markers are already off by 1/32”.Of the five hole sizes, only one is accurate the ½”, and can be used with no compromise. Two can be used with a workaround, ¼” and 5/16”, and two are unusable, 3/8” and 7/16”.
