I'm a profession mariner that uses a handheld for backup on the boat, deck to bridge calls, use on small boats without a VHF and shore to boat calls. I need a small light radio since I like to just keep it in the backpack. I was leery about buying another cheap Uniden since I was never completely happy with my last radio a Uniden MHS350. I was considering paying over $200 for an Icom since I am a professional after all. Well in the end I cheaped out again and tried another Uniden, the MHS75, for only 80 dollars.Well so far a great decision. This $80 radio has better range, battery life (lithium ion rather than NiMh) and controls than my last $125 radio. No problem reaching the beach on inland waters, the battery lasts all day even with numerous transmissions at 5 watts, and the controls work better and are more intuitive than my last radio. It's very light and and seems well built. The only negative I was worried about from the reviews was the 12 volt only charger. Well it charges up well enough in my truck which does continue charging even when the ignition is off so I can just leave it overnight for a full charge. I do work on larger boats with only 120v AC and no convenient 12 volt so I bought a cheap 120 volt to 12v cigarette plug adapter here on Amazon for $3.So all in all this is an excellent radio for the price. If I get a couple of years out of it It will have been a worthwhile purchase.

Love this little radio. Battery life is fantastic, brings in signals other radios do not, knobs to set squelch and volume.#1 drawback is radio does not float (nor does it claim to). Don't drop it overboard! #2 drawback - radio only comes with 12V charger (plugs into cigarette lighter port). Bought a 12V power supply with cigarette port that plugs into normal 120V AC socket. The power supply can also power my 12V air compressors from house outlet instead of having to start car.Had the radio on for two days of cruising with 18 other sailboats, and had to communicate with 3 bridge tenders (twice each). Battery still showed 50% at the end of 2 days without any recharging. Outstanding battery life for a handheld radio.Reception was clear, loud, and completely understandable. Everybody I talked to heard us fine on the 1W setting, never went to higher transmit power.

Purchased this to take out on the ocean in Monterey Bay on one-man and two-man Outrigger canoes. There are times we are more than a mile from shore, and three or four miles from the harbor. It seemed to be prudent to have a radio. Last week there was a rescue within 200 yards of the Coast Guard pier of two experienced kayakers who got flipped in rough chop. They had a radio and were picked up quickly. Without the radio they may have been in the water much longer before someone saw them and called for help. Nice high quality radio. This radio has held it's charge for over a month, turned off between uses. It is nice to listen to the weather channel while heading to the water. The radio is clear and plenty loud. Simple to use and to set up scanning. I like that it is totally waterproof, since we get pretty wet and may even flip into the water. It fits into a pocket on my Camel Back fanny pack, because it is small. I have a longer leash tied to the belt so I won't lose it, since it doesn't float, but I would rather have it smaller and tie it on. I did buy a plug in 12 volt converter to charge it at home. (Garmin brand, since I have a Garmin GPS, and I wanted to get enough power to charge that too.) I looked at a lot of radios and I am really happy with this choice.

this is my third and last radio from uniden. the radio itself works well and i like having knobs to turn the volume and the squelch rather than push buttons like on other radio models. the sound through the speaker is a bit distorted as it got wet a few times...would by nice to have a "burp"feature" on it. Now for the charger...what a piece of junk! got my first radio years ago and the plastic clips that hold it to the radio broke in a short time. i had to wrap black electrical tape around it to hold it to the radio in order to get it to charge. this year while trying to attach the charger to the radio i lightly bumped the chargers plug against a wooden table and the end snapped off. now i had a radio i liked but no way to charge it! i wanted another small radio (fits in several of my pfds nicely) so i took a chance and ordered another one like it. i reasoned that if i was careful i would have a new charger and maybe i could get a few years out of my old one yet. well when i received the new one i took everything out of the packaging and clipped the charger to the new radio...immediately one of the clips on the charger broke! i was hoping that maybe after all this time maybe uniden had enough complaints about their charger and made a better one. they did not:( it is a real shame to have a decent radio on the market and then pair it with a cheap charger. guess i'm back to wrapping the charger and radio together with tape in order to keep using it...
