It takes a 32mm socket. And I had to remove the wire from the starter for room to work from below. Remember to disconnect both batteries before getting too close to the starter wire. The old one took a breaker bar with a cheater pipe on it to break loose. And there is still a half gallon or more of antifreeze left up in there when the old one comes out. Be prepared with a pan. This is a good quality element with o-ring seal , a good cord, and 1000w of heating power.

My only complaint to this product is that it has no protection on the plug when not in use, so it's getting all the salt and water spraying on it while driving down the road, it doesn't heat the block as much as I would've liked, however, its not a major issue b/c it does keep it right around 80-90 degrees in the teens and allows the truck to start with less smoke than a cold start, and since I keep it in the garage that's a must for me. Plus, the instant heat is nice!very quick and easy install, it took me about 2.5 hours to install it...and that's only because I had to search for my 1/2" extensions for about 2 of those hours!! Be prepared to lose about a 1/4 - 3/4 gallon coolant while changing. We got it really quick on the first try and we used about 1/2 gallon. I've had it installed all winter and still works like day one. PS: the heavier the extension cord, the better it works....so if it doesn't work as well as it should, you probably need a bigger gauge extension cord. with my heavy-duty cord I'm getting around 90 degrees on a 10-20 degree day.

Have had it for 1.5 months and all good. Perfect for my 6.0. The plug at the heater is a 90 and would be better if it was straight. But works fine

Worked real good for most of the first winter, but has stopped working already, didn’t even make it through an entire year
