Nipple drinkers are an innovative way to provide fresh water to your flock. As a bird drinks, the stainless tab is activated, releasing a small amount of water onto the lower lip of the nipple. Horizontal nipple drinkers can be installed on the side of a bucket or similar container.
All you'll need for installing the watering nipple is an 11/32 drill bit. The nipple assembly screws right into your container, so additional tools will NOT be necessary. Drill a hole 1 inches up from the bottom of the container. Screw the threaded chicken nipple directly into the hole. Screw in the threaded chicken nipple so that when you are finished the nipple lip is at the bottom side. Each pack of this horizontal side mount poultry nipple waterer includes installation guide along with some tips with what works best for these nipple waterer and for your poultry.
We suggest 5 birds per nipple. Also the poultry should be reaching up so there is less wasted water as they don't have to twist their neck to drink. Placing the container up on cinder blocks will get it to a good working height.
Important - nipple drinkers require a low-pressure water source. If connecting to household water lines, a pressure regulator must be used.

The hens adapted quickly to these versus the cups!! Stays 100% cleaner! Just waiting to see if they’ll not freeze this winter!

These prevent wasting water, if installed correctly, and the tiny depression under the nipple is easier to train for than plain (vertical) nipples and far easier to keep clean than bowl types. I have always had trouble keeping any style waterer from leaking when installed into plastic buckets, but these are 1/8 MNPT threads. I used threaded bulkheads on 5 gal buckets to screw these into and totally eliminated leaks. I only refill about half as much as I used to. They would also be great for 1/2 PVC pipe with 1/8 FNPT fittings.

I bought some of these to build a new heated watering station for my hens as the cold weather was coming to Wisconsin. I bought a 250W K and H Pet bucket heater and put in a 6 gallon plastic pail. It did good during regular cold temperatures but this week its been super cold. Last night outdoor temps were -15 degrees F so I moved the bucket inside of the roost. It got down to about -2 degrees in the roost last night and when I went out to check all of the nipples were frozen. I was able to free them up and get them flowing quickly though by just moving the metal piece back and fourth a few times. I think that during the day they will be ok because the hens will keep them moving but I will check them every morning during sub zero temps for sure. Going away for a few days soon so I'm not sure what I'll do then. The chickens learned how to use them right away though. I just stayed in the coop for a few minutes and poked at them with my finger to show them that water comes out and after a couple minutes two hens were interested and started drinking and then all of the rest figured it out.

I used these on multiple types of covered containers- they’re awesome! The chickens converted to them with no issues, there is absolutely no waste, no leaking, no more dirty water, and they have no problems getting what they need! Since they’re so easy to set up, I put buckets in several places around the yard, can dump ice blocks in on hot days, and only need to change and fill buckets about once a week. Everything stays fresh, clean and cool! Such a huge time saver, and saves so much money over buying waterers at the farm store.

Installed these on a kitty litter bucket for our flock of chickens. They worked well initially, but after a few months, we were having to replace one of them every week. The spring inside the mechanism would dislodge, allowing the water to drip out of the bucket. This created a mess and left no water for our flock. Sometimes the spring was still in the spout and my husband could easily put back in to reuse, but often they were missing in the floor of the coop and the whole spout needed tossed out. I really do like this idea and type of spout, but will be purchasing a different brand in the future.
