I am an N Scale (160:1) model railroader. I use a very small, sharp soldering tip. As a result, I am constantly ruining tips through corrosion. With the sal ammoniac block it is a simple matter to rub the tip into the block after disconnecting the iron and apply some solder to tin the tip. Using this procedure, I have been using the same soldering tip for over 4 years. NOTE: the fumes produced by rubbing a hot tip on the sal ammoniac block are very toxic. Let the tip cool just a little before rubbing. This will decrease the amount of fumes produced.

I was just learning soldering and was having lots of problems with the flux not sticking to the iron. Thought I would never learn on my own, then ran across this amazing stuff. It works really well. My iron is no longer ruined from me trying to make it work and now the flux is on the iron flowing flawlessly. Use between every solder application. Cheap fix to a beginners problems. Just a solid block of a compound that will last you forever!

I learned about this in junior high metal shop. I had some black soldering irons that solder would no longer stick to. The Sal Ammoniac cleaned them up nicely and they are now tinned again. The block should last a very long time.
