It detects the smallest amount of carbon dioxide. And will alarm well before you get carbon dioxide poisoning. Well worth the money

Did not show what way to install battery. Had to remove and flip to avoid "low battery" message.

I received the detector today. It requires a 9v alkaline battery which is not included. The battery is for backup; the instructions say for up to 4 hours in case of AC power failure. The display does include a battery health indication.Of note, there is no indication, either in the instructions or on the unit, as to which polarity the battery should be installed, and the two terminals for battery contact are identical, so give no clue. I inserted the battery randomly and the unit immediately came to life. As a test, I reversed the battery polarity. Nothing happened; the unit stayed dead. Put the battery back as it was originally and the unit came to life. So there's no harm if the battery is inserted wrong; just turn it over and reinsert. The thing TALKS to you. Pretty cool. Upon inserting the battery or plugging into AC power, a 60-second visual countdown proceeds, accompanied by all indicators flashing. At the end of the countdown the display returns to zero and only the green light is illuminated. This is the normal operating condition, according to the instructions, Pressing the test button initiates flashing indicators and a very loud siren sound, which is what's desired. The unit goes back in normal mode after a few seconds of alarming. The instructions are reasonably comprehensive and the English is OK for the most part, although the syntax wanders a bit in a few places. This is typical of Chinese products in my experience, but is better than most. It's improved immensely over the years. Now the write-up on Amazon says the unit detects carbon monoxide, methane and propane. The instructions only mention carbon monoxide and methane. No mention of natural gas or propane. For this reason I'm deducting two stars. If the unit does, indeed detect natural gas and propane it should be specified clearly in the instructions. I'm aware that natural gas is mainly methane, but I and most people are not accustomed to calling natural gas methane. Propane is heavier than air, unlike methane/natural gas. The instructions specify that the unit should be installed as high as possible, which makes sense for carbon monoxide and methane but not propane, leading me to assume the unit is not meant to detect propane. If this is the case the Amazon writeup needs to be corrected..Of course I have no way of knowing at this point whether the unit will work as expected in it's detection functions. I can only hope this is the case.
