The tool rest surface is smooth. The one inch shaft was a tight fit for my Laguna banjo. Sanding with 220 enabled a fit.

The wide, curved cross-section is great for rigidity, and provides a comfortable hand rest. The top edge of the tool rest makes a perfect fulcrum for the lathe chisel, and allows me to smoothly slide the tool side to side. The tool post however is about 3†too short for my 16†lathe. The tool rest is nice enough though, that I will take the effort to weld on a piece of 1†bar to extend the post. Recommended if you have a smaller lathe.

One star about the delivery. The product is fine...5 stars. The driver was too lazy to bring it to the front door like all other drivers easily do. It was dropped about 2 feet from a sign that said "exit only, enter via upper driveway".

This rest is made of welded steel, not cast iron. It won't snap like the two cast iron rests I had before it. Highly recommended.
