Please attention: The 8.8 rear axle first appeared in 1977, and from the '86 onwards, almost all Ford V8 cars, V6 Rangers and Explorers were equipped with the 8.8 rear axle. With millions of them produced and adapted to different models, the threaded holes have sometime been machined a little short. If you are in this case, just had some washers, or replace the screws with some 5mm shorter.

Fisrt of all, This fits great!!!!. You get a nice and performance diff cover for less money. All bolts have the right lenght and thread. For those people could not installed it, you have made something wrong. I bought this item with some fear, but now I can say that it fits perfectly.

So there's reviews that say the drain plug leaks. I don't need a drain plug as I like to remove the cover to see what's going on inside when I do gear oil changes. So I got a brass plug, used blue high temp Loctite, and lastly filled in the hole on the inside with JB weld. If it leaks, that's on me.It's nice that the cover has a top fill hole, but my housing has one also. Since I added a truss to this 8.8, I had to weld the vent hole shut since the truss sits right on top of it. I bought a 1/2" NPT 90° that I'll use as the new vent.On the girdle studs, I added copper washers under the jam nuts, since there is no sealing there besides the threads(which do not extend all the way to the outer part of the girdle), so I wanted to prevent any possible leaks. I'm sure one could find an O-ring that would fit in there, but the copper washers will work just fine.Other than those things, it's a good cover. The casting is very nice, no large pieces of flashing or chunks. It looks like it's machined well too. This cover will also clear ARP 250-3004 carrier bearing cap studs. Those ARP studs are sold for a Ford 9", but the threads are the same and they're only .125" longer and $15 cheaper than the Trick Flow 8.8 studs. One downside, is that the cover bolts included with the cover are fine thread(5/16"-24). Most 8.8's, maybe all, are coarse thread, so I had to buy 10 new Allen head bolts as well, hence the 4 star rating. I got stainless hardware(bolts, washers, and lock washers) since I didn't want them rusting over time. Cover bolts are 5/16"-18 with a 1" under head length. With a few modifications and another $20 added to the cost, this girdle cover was worth the money to me.

Bolts are wrong thread pitch and where the holes are recessed the stock bolts won’t work. Found out the hard way after I had already drained and prepped it it be installed. Save your money and buy one from ford racing or late model restoration

The reviews talking about it leaking or not fitting correctly don't understand how to install this cover. For one, you'll need to back off the girdle bolts, otherwise it's not going to sit flat. Make sure to use some teflon tape or thread sealer on the drain bolt. I used thread sealer on the girdle bolts as well, I undid them as far as they would go and applied the sealer to the threads then tightened them down (10ft/lbs from what I found elsewhere). The included cap screws fit my 2000 Ford Explorer 8.8 without issue. I ditched the included gasket and used a lube locker knockoff also found on here without issue. It's been 1k miles with NO leaks. This cover is great, install was pretty easy, and being able to fill from the back was so much easier then the front of the 8.8

The cover fit properly however the locking screws for the carrier caps did not work as expected. When the screws were backed out to adjust one cross threaded and could not be repaired. It was a waste of money.

Nice to see internal ribs to actually help heat transfer. Needed a little modification to fit 8.8 from an explorer but nice part

The diff cover itself was great, especially at the price point. The casting is pretty much identical to the Ford Racing/Performance cover. I would know because I had one about 3 years ago on a different mustang. I bought a Lubelocker gasket instead of using the included gasket. The bolts are left to be desired. They started to stretch badly at around 13 lbs-ft of torque, plus, the washers started to bow. The bolts are about 1/4" too short for adequate thread to torque engagement, plus very small bolt heads can't be holding up very well. I bought myself some 5/16-18 x 1.25" 304 stainless bolts 1/2" bolt head size with stainless washers. Applied ARP lube to the threads, back side of the bolt heads and washer to prevent galling and torqued it up to 24 lbs-ft. All was good there.Last but not least, even after tightening the included 1/2" NPT plugs, the bottom one is leaking pretty badly. I'm using 75w-85 synthetic gear oil, it will leak out and leave a small puddle. Will be taking the plug off and installing another plug, and applying some PTFE thread sealant. Normally I would be perfectly fine with some tradeoffs in quality at this price point, but this one was a little too much trouble especially for simple oil leaks. Hope the quality can be improved, just a hair, for future customers.

Bolts do NOT thread in, I have an 86, as well as a 96 8.8 rear end, neither accepted the bolts included. No big deal I will buy some, but loses a star for that.

The cover is not straight but silicone fixes everything doesn't it? And the bolts just throw them in the garage.
