Made for SmartThings and Aeotec Smart Home Hub

smartthings water leak sensor for aeotec smart home hub

Works with SmartThings Hub. Connects to Aeotec Smart Home Hub. Works via Zigbee.

Aeotec Water Leak Sensor, previously the SmartThings Water Leak Sensor, is a small device that provides protection against potential big disasters. Just set it and forget it. The sensor monitors moisture and water leaks to prevent flooding, as well as sudden rises or drops in temperature. Easily install the sensor sinks and other household appliances that are prone to leaking and/or are temperature sensitive. The sensor must be used with the Aeotec Smart Home Hub or SmartThings Hub or other compatible device for functionality, along with the free SmartThings app for the ability to monitor and receive alerts through your phone when excess water or temperature changes are detected.

Water Leak Sensor is part of Aeotec's range of SmartThings product which includes;

These sensors are really nice. They combine a compact form factor with a very functional unit that both senses water as well as temperature, which is a great combination. The only downsides are that they don't have the long range offered in newer protocols like LoRa, and the batteries they use are expensive to replace. The batteries do last a long time, but they aren't cheap when they do need to be replaced.A non-standard usage I did as well -- I created my own "cable" leak sensor by soldering moisture cable leads to one of the two sets of exposed sensor contacts on one of these. It worked great! I'd love to see a native cable-based sensor that works with these, but it is nice that these are not too hard to modify given their design.Aeotec seems to have fully picked up the ball from Samsung on the product lines. I wish they'd bring the prices down some, but it is nice that the Samsung product line didn't get terminated altogether when Samsung elected to cease selling them.

I wanted to add another Leak detector to our Smart Things system. These connect fast with no hassle. Aeotec must of been the original mfg for the Smart Things detector, or they purchased the rights to make them. They are approx 1.5x the original ST price, but no hassle connection with routines that work is worth is

Easy to set up, and very sensitive. Gives me a sense of calm and security, knowing that I will be able to detect a leak early on.

The device arrived without a battery which the instructions state should be shipped with one. After purchasing a battery, I was able to pair it with my smart things hub. I created a routine to turn off the water value if water is detected. I placed the sensor on a wet paper towel, and it worked.

Jun 12, 24 @ 11:00 pm, I just went to bed. No sooner than my head hit the pillow to go to sleep, my basement leak detector told me no sleep and to get out of bed and check the basement.Yes, I had a leak. No it wasn't major but it did prove that I made a wise investment. My 5 Aeotec leak detectors are connected to a SmartThings/Aeotec hub. I just completed one of my todo items by recently ordering 2 more sensors to complete my leak detector requirements.

A bit pricey, but they are just so good.The design is mechanically solid. It has test points (drip sensor?) on the top, and leak probes on the bottom. Battery life is excellent. The first ones I bough in May 2020 didn't need batteries until Nov 2021. The good quality batteries I put in then, are still going strong as of Feb 2023.They quickly and easily paired with Homeassistant's ZHA integration and have had no problems with failing to remain on the zigbee network.I now have one under each sink in the house and two in the basement. In the basement they are adjacent to the sink and the well pump. Considering the cost of water damage from a leak, this is cheap insurance.

I installed this water sensor in my bathroom, and it's been a game-changer. It connects perfectly with my SmartThings setup and sends immediate alerts if it detects any leaks. I have 9 of these, purchased over the last year with one in every bathroom behind the toilet under the water inlet, under the fridge, near the dishwasher, in my hot water drains (Texas home in my attic), and under my AC condensers (Texas home in my attic). Includes both top and bottom sensing and temperature monitoring. It's given me great peace of mind. The only minor issue is battery life of less than one year from past experiences, but overall, I’m really satisfied!

Signal good, battery life good, very responsive and easy to set up. BUT I've had to replace this leak detector twice now because it self-destructs if it gets wet. But getting wet is the environment it's suppose to operate in! If you actually have a leak, water will get into the unit and corrode the electronics almost immediately. The second time mine triggered I got it out of the moisture immediately, and still, it stopped working after I put in a new battery. It was badly corroded when I broke open the case to inspect. Aeotec makes a unit with the water sensor separately on a cable which I'm trying next.

I have many Aeotec / Smartthings sensors, the build quality of these sensors is always brilliant.They are a little pricey, so I have tried other well known brands to help keep costs down. However the build quality of these is so much higher than the other brands. I will definitely buy again.Additionally this sensor uses a CR2 battery rather than the button cell batteries. Whilst I haven't had this long enough to test battery life I expect it to last a long time which is based on my experience of Aeotec devices that use the larger CR123A batteries.Setting up the device is a breeze as it always is. Put the hub into pairing mode, pull the battery tab, name the device and give it a location. Simple and painless.I have done some initial testing (as I always do when I set up a sensor for the first time) the sensor responds instantly to a puddle of water and also to water droplets on the top of the sensor.Bottom line: buy a quality product like this or buy twice!
