Over the years I've owned quite a few soapstone holders. This one is as good as any, with one exception. As mentioned in other reviews, it is hard to push down the adjuster and expose more of the soapstone. I'm thinking it'll wear in and become easier to move. In the meantime, I put a small piece of self-adhesive sandpaper on the adjuster. Works just fine now. Because of this, I'd like to have given it a 4 1/2 star rating. There is no problem with the clip on mine. Instead of having a couple of sharp tips it has a dimple pushed into the end of the clip. It applies enough pressure to keep it in my pocket without damaging the material. The included soapstone were undamaged. I wouldn't expect the one in the holder to be damaged, and the double wrapping (including one of bubble wrap) kept the additional stones undamaged.

I recently embarked on a project building raised flower beds from paver bricks. It seemed that soap stone is the preferred marking method so I gave these a shot.I ended up using the markers quite a bit as I had a pallet (135) of bricks in different patterns I needed to separate, mark, and make random. Worked very well. The holder worked great and enabled me to chuck it on the ground without breaking the stick. My only two gripes would be it is a wide tip so takes some practice when marking a brick for precise cutting and the marks do wipe off pretty easily. That said, if they were thinner it would likely break and the wiping off is probably the nature of soap stone. Perhaps I'll see if I can sharpen the tip (I have zero experience with soap stone)Despite marking over 100 bricks, I barely used any of the first soap stone stick (maybe 1"). At this rate, they will last longer than me :)

I prefer this flat soapstone holder over the round because if I overuse the round and get down to a nub, it's a pain to get more soapstone out. This one's just easier to use.Unfortunately, I'm struggling to find appropriate soapstone refills.

I have not used soapstone before so i am not an expert but this rating and review have a few reasons why I am happy so far.• The holder is stainless steel, which is nice (no corrosion)• My holder was very tight when I recieved it which took some fiddling to get it to slide initially, but I think that is good in the long run as it will not be too loose later down the road hopefully.• The holder came like the picture with one soapstone already loaded and several refills, the loaded holder was wrapped and protected separately from the refills so while I can use my new holder my refills are still protected in my tool drawers till I need them.• I tested the soapstone immediately: it looks like chalk on a chalkboard, so it writes well• Marks are easily removed (this could be a positive or negative depending on your needs)• The product was well packaged and protected for shipping inside both a manilla bubble pack and a nicely sized box.• The company seems to care about customer service, they followed up with helpful tips on FAQs
