It uses little force, simply pushes the tapered blade onto the bagel, and thanks to the precise design, the bagel slicer will produce minimal shredding when slicing. Unlike a bread knife that needs to be moved forward and backward, the bagel slicer will slice cleanly and has an access slot for easy bagel removal. How to use your bagel slicer? Step 1 Grasp the top of the handle with one hand and the base with the other, and lift the handle portion of the bagel slicer off the base. Step 2 Place the bagels on the base. Then place the handle blade face down on the base. After placing the blade portion of the handle straight on the base, push down until the blade of the handle touches the base. Step 3 Hold the base with one hand and the handle portion with the other, and remove the cut bagel. Suggest: Never slice frozen or stale bagels, as they will dull the blade. Slice before freezing bagels, or thaw frozen bagels before slicing. Hot, moist, or sticky bagels may become compressed or flattened during slicing; allow bagels to cool before slicing. Good for medium firmness, especially for hard bagels, not for soft bagels.

TLDR: look elsewhere, spend a couple dollars more for a quality slicer.Though the blade looked sharp, this bagel slicer never cut a bagel well. Something about the way the blade fits into the center slot causes bagels to be crushed down into the groove rather than sliced. Believing at first that it was user error, I tried different brands of bagel. I tried fresh bakery bagels. I tried frozen store brand bagels. I tried a stale bagel left out for three days. None of them cut well.Eventually I removed the screws and forced the blade to sit lower, thinking it had been assembled incorrectly at the factory and that was causing it to crush rather than cut the lower portion of my bagels. This did not improve the cutting at all.The product survived a couple hundred bagels without the plastic cracking, which is a plus. I think that says more about my refusal to buy a better slicer than it does about the product though.

This product simply doesn't work! The blade is not sharp enough to cut a bagel so instead the bagel is crushed/smooshed when you push the plunger. Don't waste your money on this!
