I am not an avid collector of really expensive fancy fountain pens, but I do have several inexpensive ones that I rely on for sketching and underdrawings for my watercolors, so I am not what you would call a novice either. There are a lot of things about this set I really like and very few things that make me go 'meh', first off I love the aesthetic of this set, the box and color of the pens has a very 90s retro look to me and as a child of the 90s I love it. The pens feel good to hold, with decent weight and a lovely matte finish that feels very soft against my fingers, I love that. I also really like that each pen came with a converter, I thought maybe only one converter would come with this set and I would have to pick a favorite case and nib and use the included ink cartridges for the other two.The included ink is fine, I loaded up one of the black inks and it is a cool black with blueish undertones, it feathers a little on paper I usually don't have feathering issues with, so I am probably going to toss them in the box with all the other ink cartridges I never use because I am picky about my inks. I tested out all the nibs with the black ink included since I wanted to see how they wrote, for the most part I loved the nibs. I found getting the covers off the ones not on the pens absolutely awful and had to use pliers, but at least I can say they were very secure in the case. I really liked the brush, it is a taklon hair brush and very snappy, perfect for sketching or calligraphy, or ink painting if you load your pen with a drawing ink and mix in some water washes. The EF is more akin to my fine or thinner medium nibs and definitely not an EF, the bent nib was my absolute favorite. The flat block style nibs are mostly fine, the 3 was a bit scratchy and I was not a fan of it having an angle, but I don't use these styles all that often, I would have preferred some other styles and shapes for nibs.I cleaned out the nibs, selected my three favorites, and then loaded up the converter with my inks of choice. The converters mostly worked fine, one of them fell apart when I was filling it and I had to fish it out of the ink bottle, but I put it back together and everything was fine after that. I really wanted to test out the bent tip nib, so I used my favorite ink (Platinum Carbon Black) and did a fairly quick sketch and I loved how the ink flows, it was smooth and there was no scratchiness with the nib. I found it a delight to work with, sometimes pens have trouble with carbon black because it is pigment based instead of dye based, but not these pens.Years ago I got a beginners set for fountain pens and found it so awful it put me off of them for years, I think this set would have changed my mind and made me obsessed. I do wish the instructions were clearer for beginners, more than just the insert ink and go, maybe some tips on how to care for the fountain pens and the like since beginners need to know that or risk trashing their pens.

The box arrives and was noisy when you moved it around. I bought this as a gift so I opened it to see what was making so much noise. All the nibs and pens were loose in the box instead of being secured into their spots. Also the instructions are missing, which is annoying, because this is a gift for a child who will not know how to use put things together or use it. The pens do not look like they’ve been used, but the box has obviously been opened and little care was taken in replacement.

I was watching some real-life courtroom footage on the Internet yesterday. A young woman, sitting in the witness box, was presented a hand-written letter and asked by a lawyer to read it aloud to the jury. I guess this was supposed to be some kind of dramatic “Ah-Ha!†moment for the prosecution or defense, but imagine the look on the lawyers’ faces when the witness asked, “Read what?†That’s right--in this post-computer era, the “witness†was incapable of recognizing cursive handwriting as written language, let alone being able to decipher and read it. While it’s clear that this lady wouldn’t have the foggiest idea what to do with a nib pen and a cartridge of ink, if you do, you’re bound to find value in the Aifeiter Calligraphy Pen set.The product starts with a robust presentation-style cardboard box—not merely a disposable container to ship items in, but a well-made reusable case in which the set components can be permanently organized and stored. The set contains three fountain pens. The pen bodies are aluminum (giving them nice heft and a “quality†feel). Each pen is fitted with a different style nib. Inside each pen you’ll find a piston-style ink cartridge. By rotating the knob at the rear of the piston-cartridge, you can suck ink (from a bottle) into the cartridge, which can then be loaded into the pen body of your choice. If you prefer the convenience of pre-loaded ink cartridges, Aifeiter has you covered. The kit includes three boxes full of cartridges (about 60 in total) in a virtual rainbow of colors. While I’m biased toward the notion of refillable piston-style ink cartridges, I’ve found the pre-loaded cartridges don’t require as much tinkering to prime the nibs and keep the ink flowing. Perhaps a different brand or type of bottled ink would result in improved reloadable-cartridge performance, but for now, I prefer the pre-loaded ink cartridges. Finally, the kit rounds out with four additional nibs that can be swapped onto the pen bodies as desired. These latter nibs have substantially wider tips, necessary to create the angled “ribbons†and wedge-shapes associated with fancy calligraphy.I am not a calligrapher. Calligraphy is an art and as it the case with any real art, competence requires proper instruction followed by a commitment to practice. That said, after 10 minutes of YouTube instruction and a little trial-and-error on scrap paper, I was able create letters and numbers of sufficient artistic merit to impress my wife. This set would make a great gift to an aspiring artist. Fancy script and calligraphy is the obvious application, but I suspect that sketch artists or cartoonists might find application for this product as well. One of the pen nibs has a very fine writing point. Even if you never move past signing checks or making entries in a ledger, that (and the 60 ink cartridges) alone are worth the purchase.
