I'm working at modifying the timing of a small gas engine, and needed a TDC locator device and timing wheel so that I could experiment with precise timing intervals. I found both items at Amazon, and this TDC locator works nicely in conjunction with the timing wheel to pinpoint timing degrees in relation to Top Dead Center of piston travel.

This is a well made tool and is not very pricey, however, it would not contact my piston on a 383 SBC with angle plug Brodix heads. My pistons are zero decked with a small 3/16" dome top and still would not contact this tool.I wanted to use this to verify my timing pointer was still zeroed after I had to remove the timing cover and pointer to adjust cam timing. The pointer was zeroed without the heads on and a dial indicator, however as mentioned above I had to remove the pointer and cover and wanted this tool to re-verify pointer location on the balancer for accurate timing.I am going to attempt to modify this tool by either welding an extension on the end or simply slipping a piece of plastic tubing over the end to get a little added diameter.

was going to use this on a new engine i am building but decided not to use . it screwed into the opening with some resistance. and the fact that i had the engine all closed up i decided not to use it in fear of the bolt hitting the piston. so what i did instead was take a wooden dowel just smaller then the opening and putting a mark on it to show T.D.C. sometimes the best solution is the simplest solution.

Put a 302 into my 66 coupe used a 289 cover with the 302 balancer had to make a custom timing pointer this tool helped be find TDC on the pulley so I could properly set timing. Thanks

Easy tool to use and helped me find TDC on my '76 Johnson outboard engine, way more accurate than just jamming a screwdriver in there which is what I saw in some how-to videos. It's basically just a bolt threaded through another bolt so it really couldn't be a whole lot simpler than it is, you thread the outside bolt into the spark plug hole and then thread the inner bolt until it makes contact with the piston. Some previous reviews mentioned if you're not careful the inner bolt can thread straight through the outer bolt and fall into the piston housing but they must have fixed that because there's a taper that stops it from going through. No complaints from me.

i read another review before buying this product which said it worked on a ford 302 boat engine, but unfortunately this does not work on my ford 302 engine. my engine is 302 from a 1987 mustang. the problem is the thread on the piston stop does not catch the thread on the engine. I tried atleast 7 times, i keep on twisting the piston stop but it just does not catch the thread. they should have made the tool longer.
