Don't bother with Vacuum Seals

Why Choose Airlock Lids?

Using an airlock lid for fermentation is often better than using a vacuum seal for a few reasons.

  • An airlock lid allows gases to escape and prevents unwelcome intruders from entering. This creates a stable environment for the fermentation process.
  • An airlock lid is more hands-off and reliable, while a vacuum seal can be prone to failure or leaks.

TLDR works fine for primary fermentation. Good gasket. Silicone helps. Not ideal for secondary aging.Works as expected. The lid has a gasket to help keep it air tight. I recommend a food grade silicone if you plan on aging something with this, but not necessary if you maintain the co2 layer in the headspace. That’s my miscalculation though. The headspace or volume between brew surface and jar lid is too small when you allow a gap for the airlock. Not ideal in a wide mouth jar I was going to use this to keep the overflow from racking my bigger batches into smaller bottles, however, I don’t see myself letting mead or wine age in these.

I really liked these lids and airlocks. Simple to use. I used for the first time with making a batch of fermented garlic cloves. They turned out pretty amazing after fermenting a little over three weeks. I would however not use the tops for storage in the fridge as the fermentation smells will seep into the fridge. I use mason jars and have found that using a piece of cling wrap under the regular jar lid works at keeping the smells down a bit.
