Esschert Design TH31 “Thunder Glass” / Weather Glass Barometer with Cast Iron Filigree Holder and Pan. This beautiful and highly functional “Thunder Glass” / Weather Glass barometer is ready to be hung on your wall and predict the weather. Elegant hand-blown glass pitcher rests in a beautifully crafted filigree cast iron base with a durable antique brown finish. Shows weather changes by measuring atmospheric pressure and raising and lowering the liquid in the spout. Rising liquid indicates approaching cloud cover and possible precipitation; falling liquid indicates improving or clear weather. Fill glass halfway with water to allow the other half to be exposed to the atmosphere (distilled water will prevent water spot). Customize by adding your favorite food coloring to the liquid/water. Be sure to fill on a calm, sunny day since pressure is measured based on the internal pressure of the barometer at the time it was sealed. Hang in partial sun where temperature is constant; changes in water temperature will impact readings and heat can evaporate your liquid. **Please note: water will rise very quickly or even spill out into pan when heavy or potentially dangerous precipitation is expected. Filling Instructions: 1. Fill one pot or bucket with warm water and a second with cold water. 2. Submerge entire barometer in warm water. Keep barometer under water until you no longer see air bubbles being released. 3. Place one finger over spout before removing barometer from water. 4. Submerge barometer in cold water while still covering spout with your finger. Remove your finger to allow cold water to fill barometer until bubbles stop. 5. Repeat steps 1-4 until water settles 1” above spout. Don’t forget to seal spout with your finger each time you move barometer to new bucket. 6. Hang barometer allowing water to reach room temperature. 7. Empty spout until half full. 8. Add desired food coloring through spout. Dimensions: 5.5” long x 4.75” wide x 11” high. Weighs 2.02 pounds. Wife and I saw one of these while on vacation in the Caribbean. The inn keepers have it hanging on the wall near the outdoor dining area. I was fascinated by it. It’s beautiful, functional, with old world charm. Shortly after we got home I started searching online for it, lo and behold here it is on Amazon. I ordered it immediately. It just arrived today and we are so pleased. It is exactly like the one we saw on vacation! The cast iron is heavy. Well made. The glass is gorgeous and very delicate — almost weightless in your hand. We have it hanging on our back patio. Looking forward to seeing it react to the changing weather here in the SC Lowcountry.Edit: a followup edit after owning this for several months. We still love it and it’s a great conversation piece on our screened-in porch. It’s beautiful. I do have a complaint but I have a feeling this is user error. It seems to react more to temperature swings than it does barometric pressure. For example, in the morning the fluid will be low, but by the afternoon it will rise and spill out. This occurs every day, regardless of rain, to the extent that after a few days it is practically empty and I need to add more water. So, I am thinking, maybe this shouldn’t be located outdoors? Maybe it should be inside where the temperature is fairly constant?

It arrived unbroken. We love it. It is beautiful and helps me see barometric changes that affect my migraines. Please understand that this is a barometer. It shows you the barometric pressure, which does affect weather, but it does not supernaturally predict the weather. It has been fun to watch the correlation. Low pressure often brings wind or precipitation, but the last few days we have had high pressure trapping down low lying, drizzling clouds. Filling it was super easy. It came with a syringe. It will kind of self adjust the water level buy overflowing a bit in low pressure, or letting an air bubble in if high air pressure pushes the water level all the way down the spout, so don't be too fussy about filling it. I filled mine when the barometric pressure was about 30.0 up to the widest part of the glass and let it self adjust from there.

With this winter storm moving across the nation, I waited to write the review to make sure it really worked—and it did!! As the front moved in, the water rose up the spout. It was easy to install and adequately described.

This is a beautiful, heavy, yet delicate (glass), piece of useable art! It has a diagram on the box that shows 3 conditions of weather, sunny, fair, stormy. I added water to simulate the current weather. It was over cast and expected to rain later that day. I filled such that the water in the spout was just above the water in the base of the glass. Sure enough! About 4 hours later, the water had risen a couple inches higher in the tube! And it did rain. It's fun to predict the weather and my usable art is very accurate!

If you are a migraine, sufferer, this product is a must! The barometric pressure can trigger migraines in many people who are hyper sensitive to changes in the weather. I have had one of these for over 30 years. I now give them as gifts for every holiday possible! Put it on the wall, near a window, and never touch it again until it needs more liquid, or it needs to be cleaned. It’s beautiful too! Add food coloring to match your decor.

When I first set it up, I had a large void of air in the globe itself and it worked more like a thermometer than a barometer, the water would rise and fall with the temperature, regardless of atmospheric pressure. After I completely filled it, it hasn't budged, but neither has the pressure according to the weather apps. I'm not expecting precision, just a quick reference of the day's pressure, which it seems to be doing. The cast iron holder is nice and sturdy.

Funciona perfectamente.

Slecht weer is snel zichtbaar. Een aanrader.

Die Funktion ist ja bekannt. Das Design ist schön altbacken und die Verpackung ist gut und sicher.
