My mother has had one of these for years and years - I would say twenty, at least! She had a huge jewelry collection and would spend hours and hours "playing" and looking at it. She really loved this little gadget, too. It just gave her so much pleasure and satisfaction to use it. Sadly, she passed away recently and I have been working to get it all organized. This tool, along with a good jeweler's loupe, have been absolutely indispensable for this chore. Unfortunately, I discovered that the old one had finally given out. It may have been easily repaired, I'm not even sure, because when I went on Amazon to see if I could find it, and not only found it, but with such an incredible price, I was blown away! I had always assumed it was an expensive tool and treated it very carefully. But why bother trying to get it fixed when I could get a brand new one in my home in two days? If you love jewelry, or have some pieces you're not completely sure about, this thing is just indispensable. The only reason I gave it a 4 for ease of use was because it can be a little confusing at first. But once you get the hang of it, it is so simple to use. My mother loved it, I love it, and you will love it!

I saw this unit used by the owner of a jewelry store when I was getting a ring resized, and therefore I figured this diamond tester should be good.This unit uses thermal conductivity to help identify a diamond. It's not absolute certainty to rely only on thermal conductivity as refractive index is an optical property, which also might need to be verified to be absolutely sure you have a real diamond.The meter/probe has a green...yellow...red LED-chained 'level' indication as a function of thermal conductivity.There is a four page description insert on how to use the unit properly. The four page insert is in readable English language one can understand (not like many other poorly written instructional sheets from/for Chinese made products like this one). You have to read the instructions, otherwise you will get faulty results. For example, the preparation of the probe depends on the diamonds ct weight/size, the location of measurement (the needle probe needs to hit the diamond vertically), one has to hold the probe and ring or stone holder properly etc., and the ambient temperature. There is an adjustment to be made to the probe sensitivity depending on some of these parameters (included table which is also printed on the backside of the probe) and then one can get a proper measurement to make out a diamond in terms of thermal conductivity. The unit is easy to use.The probe uses a 9V transistor block battery. It does not come with the probe. I bought a high quality Duracell 9V battery (do not buy low drain cheap 9 V batteries). The 'lamp on/ready ok' LED will illuminate when the diamond probe is ready for taking a measurement. Make sure the level meter is adjusted according to size of stone and surrounding temperature (READ the instructions of the probe). There is also an audible signal besides the LED chain which helps.what i like less about the probe:1) a 9V block type battery ... why not AAs or AAAs; (9V batteries are more expensive and less common at home ?!2) one has to adjust level meter depending on size/weight of stone (see table in instruction sheet or printed on backside of unit).Overall good value, should be helpful, but would not fully rely on this if it was critical (that's why I gave it four stars including the less liked items). The instruction sheet does specify additional tests and implications in determining a real diamond. However, I think this is a good start and maybe all one needs. I do not believe the jewelry store owner used his probe properly (he did not adjust the probe according to size of diamond and came to the incorrect conclusion on smaller diamonds because he did not adjust the level meter properly and/or shorted against the precious metal with the probe. I got believable results when making the adjustments according to the measurement table.

This diamond tester requires a 9 volt battery which is not included. (In case you want to use it as soon as you get it). I bought this as a gift for my mom because she does jewelery repairs, and she liked it alot! She says it works great to detect real diamonds (beeps if real) (no beep if fake). Although, to test extremely small diamonds it takes a few tries because of how small they are. For example diamonds that can only be seen with a magnifier will not get an accurate reading the first time so it will take a few times before it gets it. Anyways it works great and is worth the price!

This review is for the HDE High Accuracy Professional Jeweler Diamond Tester For Novice and Expert.Fine, it tests various stones, and does reliably indicate a diamond vs. a lab created stone such as Moissanite and the synthetics from De Beers (the diamond mine people).Once I found the instructions and read them I was able to use this tester on a wide variety of gems and get a good idea as to what they were, and whether real or not. The instructions are well written and easy to follow.If you’re looking for an inexpensive and quick way to test gem stones, this is a good buy. If you need to know if you’ve got s dismond, Moissanite or other stone, you’ll need to spend around $200. For my purposes, this HDE tester is fine.

I’ve only used this a couple times but it works, the instructions are easy to follow and I feel it is good value for what I paid.
