I have used a wood lathe before, but it's been many years since I did.I really like having this mini lathe. It came with both a drive spur and a face plate. The face plate runs true/flat, though with some vibration at high speeds as if it's not quite in balance. I don't expect I would use the face plate at more than a moderate speed, so it's OK.The parts move and lock down well, though I adjusted the hold down on the banjo a little so I could make it tighter. There's a screw for that which you can reach from under the bed.I found the tool rest to be too rough, so I sanded it smooth on my bench top belt sander and now it's great. The cutting tools move better on a smooth surface. I am probably going to get a longer tool rest so I don't have to move the rest as often, but it's good to have both sizes. The motor seems strong enough for spindle turning. I haven't tried to turn a bowl.I really like having a speed adjustment dial instead of having to change belts. No belt changes on this! The one thing that I've been most concerned about is that at times, the speed has changed without me touching the speed dial. It didn't do it without a wood blank on it. It only seems to do it when I have wood mounted. It did it badly the first time I put wood on it and tightened the tail stock. It sped up and slowed down significantly. I loosened the tail stock slightly and it seemed better. I hit the reset button and it was a lot better. It still does it a little, but the speed changes are small and don't seem dangerous now.I am enjoying using this lathe and I'm glad to have it. I'm not recommending it because this is not the kind of machine where you want unexpected things happening. I wrote to the seller about it through the Amazon link and I have not heard back more than a week after writing.Update: About a month after my review I took off the controller box and looked inside. It looked like the speed control is a rheostat. I sprayed it with aerosol electronics contact cleaner and the speed control works fine now. Still no reply from the seller. In using the lathe more, I'm happy with how it works with spindle turning. However, it got bogged down turning a pine bowl blank about 5 in. in diameter that was mostly round when mounted. I won't be turning bowls in the 5 in. diameter range.
