Accuracy: 4* About 2 degrees Fahrenheit off, which is one more than claimed but very workable and, I've found, pretty typical for decent aquarium heaters these days. Some are much worse. It's the reason I double check with a trusted instant read thermometer.Safety: 5* Automatic shut off for high temp and water level below top of heating element. Heating element protected by ceramic shell and full plastic cage.Size: 5* Tiny, less than four inches long and only 3/4" in diameter for the 15 watt model.Display: 4* Easy to use and has the information I need (set temp, actual temp, heating indicator and error codes). It's set in the middle of a nine foot(!) cord. My personal preference is for display/control units that have both cords going out the bottom and a hang tab on top, but this is one of the better displays I've used, certainly so much better than the old heaters with twist and guess thermostats at the cord end of the heating rod.Warranty: 5* A 2 year "limited" warranty. I appreciate a company that stands behind its products, one of the reasons that Hygger has become one of my trusted brands.

I really liked the heater but the 1-5 gallon heater was not enough to heat my 5 gallon tank to 78. It would only go to 72. I ended up purchasing the next one up and it worked. I really like the display and it is really easy to operate and understand.

Works really well. Tells you the exact temp of your tank. Easy to adjust one degree at a time. I’m really happy with this heater.

I've kept fish tanks for almost 50 years and have 18 set up right now, so I've used a few heaters. Hygger seems to be a really great brand, and they have other nice products as well. The thing that stood out with this heater is that it seemed really heavy, but since it's ceramic and explosion proof, so I can understand that. I've had tons of heaters that end up becoming un-suctioned from the sides, so I just accept it now and let them drift if they're submersible, like this one is, so I don't think it will be an issue if it falls off now and then due to old suction cups. There's a protective cage around the heating element, and it can be removed for cleaning, with some effort. My model is slightly different than the pictures however. My readout is on the element which is readable from inside the tank, but my resolution is to .5 degrees, which is nice. I wanted to double check the thermometer reading because ti seemed low for the particular tank I was testing it in. I measured the temperature with a high precision laser thermometer that I use all the time, and my tank water was actually 79.3, but the display on this was showing 77.5. I have a few heaters that are off as well and I just learn to keep that in mind. So the weight and the accuracy were really the only minor concerns for my rating. I still believe it's a wonderful heater, just not perfect. The cord is very long, and setting the temperature is very easy and intuitive so I'm very happy with the product. Thank you very much.

Our daughter has a 4-gallon aquarium where she keeps her African dwarf frog. When her previous heater stopped working, we found this one as a replacement. The heater core is much smaller than her old one, which she prefers. The controller is located on the power cord outside of the aquarium, allowing you to easily set the temperature and check the current water temperature. It also features an error light to alert you if something’s wrong, like if the heater is out of the water. Overall, it’s a great little heater for a small aquarium!

I prefer that the temperature read-out be on the controller outside the tank, than on the heater itself. Unfortunately, the single set button is on the controller with a red power light, while the display is under the translucent plastic of the heater. Sure, if you mount it where you can see the display, you are okay, but not everyone wants their heater to be visible! If that is you, don't get this heater. There is really no reason to not have the display outside as it really won't negatively impact the heater in any real way.You use the set button to determine the temperature that will cause the heater to pause heating.I tested this heater in 2.5 gallons of 60F water. It took 11 minutes to get to the set temp of 75F, and another 4 minutes for it to rise to 77.5F because of the excess heat produced by the heater that hadn't yet dissipated from it into the water. This is also a high wattage heater, so it was putting a lot of power into heating the water. The heater core is encased in a casing that allows water to flow through and heat up by convection. I didn't have any problems with air bubbles building up on it like I have the last Hygger I reviewed and a couple of other ones from other brands, so the thermal sensor didn't get blocked by air.The heater shut down as soon as its top (cord) end was not in the water, so make sure that the heater is always placed in such a way that that end will be exposed to air before the rest of it.Overall, it's a good heater and I don't see any problems with it, but I really want the readout on the controller.

I’d originally left a 5 star review based on the first few days of use. But here I am, a week later, regretting this purchase. Although the description says for up to 5 gallons, this is not working to raise the temp of my water more than 2 degrees and my poor fish are cold. This is my second one, too. I had the first one replaced due to malfunction. Amazon took care of that right away, which was great, but still doesn’t help keep my fish friends happy.I’d say this thing peaks out at maybe 3 gallons? Five gallons- no way. Unfortunately, the replacement is going back as well.
