The Kidde i12040A is an AC/DC powered, ionization smoke alarm that operates on a 120V power source with 9V battery backup. This alarm uses ionization sensing technology. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home. This smoke alarm is available in a 6-piece cut case with tray for easy display as well as a 6-piece bulk pack for contractors and property owners. Features
The Kidde i12040 smoke alarm offers a tamper-resistant feature to deter vandalism or theft and a smart interconnect system that connects with up to 24 Kidde devices--including other smoke alarms plus carbon monoxide and heat alarms. The battery-backup feature (9-volt battery included) provides protection even during power outages when many CO incidences occur. It has a large mounting base that helps protect surface paint from dirt and covers imperfections, and its pre-stripped wiring harness has an easy-off cap and tinned strands to increase conductivity.
By pressing the hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners. This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately seven minutes. During this time, the alarm chirps every 30 to 40 seconds. If the smoke is too dense, the hush feature is overridden and the alarm still sounds, and the alarm automatically resets at the end of the seven minutes. This convenient safety measure eliminates the temptation to remove the alarm's battery, which creates an unsafe situation.

I ordered 2 of theses Kiddie smoke alarms to replace older ones that were no longer available in the same model number. The ones I had were chirping all the time for no reason , very annoying But they were about 10 years old so about time to get new ones. These i12040 are the exact model I have and were a perfect fit. I am not very handy when it comes to things like this but I replaced them myself ! All I had to do was take down the old ones / I replaced the back plate too because it was dirty looking, and I remembered where the old wires were connected and connected the new ones the same way. It was simple and took me only about 5 minutes each smoke alarm . They work great , no chirping and I did test them out to make sure if there was smoke they would go off - they did.If I can put these up anyone can , believe me. They are great and no problems at all , I am very happy with them and the price, so glad I didn't pay someone to install them. So easy to install a cave woman could do it ! Actually they call me "Bat' woman . LOL !!

These are an exact replacement for the Kidde 1275 and the 1285 units. All you do is disconnect the old unit and reconnect it to the new one. It even looke just like my old unit and the old units were in my home for 10 years and didn't once have a false alarm. It appears that you can even use the existing mounting plate but I changed mine because the old one was really yellow as was the smoke detector itself. Also, the ones I received were just manufactured in February 2012 so they were brand spanking new! Be careful when you connect the detector to the mounting plate. Carefully line up the hole in the detector to the hole in the mounting plate so you don't spin the thing around for 5 minutes like I did. Once the holes are lined up, give it a very small twist in the proper direction to lock it in. Also, you have to punch out the holes in the mounting plate. Use a small screwdriver and punch out the skinny end of the hole. I didn't give it 5 stars because of the lack of a front loading battery chamber. Otherwise, really easy to install; just unpinch the old connector and push it into the new one and you're set. Check the batteries first to see if they are fully charged, just to be safe.

I bought 7 of these to replace the 10-year-old Kidde Model 1275s installed in our home by the builder. Installation was a snap -- simply dismount and unplug the old model, and plug in and mount the new one. Literally a 30-second operation.NOTE: although I didn't see it mentioned anywhere (including on the box), this unit was supplied with a battery already included. I wish I had known that as I ordered a package of 9-volt batteries at the same time. Now I have plenty of spares...The battery is pre-installed in the unit, with a plastic tape tab that you pull to connect it, without having to open the battery compartment. Again, very convenient. In addition, the unit is supplied with a plastic "shower cap" that covers the unit in case it is installed during construction -- the cover keeps it from being contaminated by construction dust, and is easily removable when work is done.If you are doing a new installation, a pre-stripped pigtail is provided for a plug-in connection to the AC cables in the outlet box. Kidde has really gone all out to make this unit as simple and fast to install as possible. The provided documentation is clearly written and very thorough.These units are white, while the older 1275's were a beige color. All this means is that if you do the simple remove-and-replace installation, you will have a white detector mounted on a beige mounting ring. No big deal for me -- the package includes the white mounting ring, but I didn't feel like swapping out the mounting rings as well. As my wife said, "who looks at a smoke detector, anyway?"If you do want to swap the mounting rings, it too is simple. Unscrew the two screws mounting the ring to the outlet box, remove the old ring and replace it with the new one, and tighten the screws.The old 1275's were absolutely trouble free for the 10 years we had them, and I am looking for another 10 years of good service from these. My only complaint is that (as recommended by Kidde) the old units apparently will go straight to the landfill -- it's too bad there is no recycle program for used smoke detectors.

This smoke alarm is pretty much obsolete at most dealers. I have 3 of the same kind so it was easy to just 'plug & play' this one into the hardwire system with no problems.
