I had been struggling with sulfur smell in my hot water for months. I have a water softener and for whatever reason the sacrificial anode in my 1) An adjustable wrench that goes to 1 3/8" is helpful. This anode is larger than the standard 1 1/8". Locking pliers would work in a pinch.2) Don't drain the whole tank. Just drain enough to relieve the pressure and get the water line a few inches below the old anode. You will appreciate the weight of the water in the tank when you have to remove the old anode.3) Be sure to sand off the paint around one of the tank casing screws so the ground wire has solid metal-metal contact.4) Make sure you have an outlet within reach or you can get to it with an extension cord.

My hot water had a sulfur smell -Hydrogen sulfide (rotten eggs). It motivated me to try an electric anode. The standard size of an anode hex head is 1 1/16”. The new anode has a size of 1 3/16” (31mm). It is not standard, and it should be. Know the size of the tool needed before buying an anode. My anode was 3½” down from the top of the water heater. That is so deep, my plumber gave up trying to find it under all the spray foam insulation. He decided it must be attached to the hot water pipe. He pulled out the pipe to find it was not there. The first anode I bought was for the water pipe, and it would not work. I dug in the insulation of the State brand water heater for 40 minutes to find the anode and clean foam off the hex head. Do not buy a State brand water heater. They are a nuisance to service. The new electric anode went in smoothly, but the top is flush with the water heater as you can see in the image. I absolutely needed a 1 3/16” socket to install it. A crescent wrench would not work. (Lost a star) 24 hours later, the rotten egg smell (sulfur) was gone. It worked as advertised which is much better than I expected.

I like the materials of this powered anode rod and looks like it's well made also.I'm trying this type of anode protection not because the other one wore out, it didn't but it became coated with calcium carbonate of which prevented the magnesium from doing its job properly. I'm under the impression that powered anode wont attract the calcium to impead the electrolysis process. Otherwise, easy to install as long as there's a outlet within the plug range. Time will tell, but for my other water heaters I'm planning on using this system going forward.

The Powered Anode Rod arrived in 1 day, was well packaged and in perfect condition.I thought it would be a good idea to test the power supply before installing the anode rod in the water heater. On my work bench I connected the red positive lead from the power supply to the push on terminal on the top of the anode rod. I held the black negative lead terminal to the side of the anode rod. I then plugged in the power supply to an AC outlet. There was no green light on the power supply to show that is was working. I disconnected the power supply from the AC outlet and the anode rod. I connected my multi meter to the power supply and plugged the power supply back in the AC outlet. The meter showed the power supply was putting out 27 volts DC. The label on the power supply shows it output is 24 DC volts.I little higher voltage with no load is OK. There was still no green light lit on the power supply. I connected the power supply to a 12 volt automobile light bulb to the provide a load for the power supply and the green light came on. The voltage on the supply was now 24 volts. The power supply is good and works with a load. I tested the anode rod conductivity. There is NO conductivity from the top positive terminal to the metal threaded side of the anode rod. The anode rod does not have functioning circuitry. UPDATE: I decided to do additional testing by placing the anode rod in water to seeif the results change.Pic1 Anode rod not in water, No green light on power supply.Pic2 Anode rod in water at a low level. No green light.Pic3 Anode rod in water with water touching the top metal piece. Green light ON.The Anode rod is functioning OK. Now to install it.I was unable to remove the existing anode rod from the water heater. After using2 different powerful impact guns, with a new 6 point 1 1/16" impact socket, anda 24 hour soaking with a penetrating solvent the anode rod would not come loose. I impacted on the anode rod until the hex shape on the top of the anode rodrounded off and the socket would just spin on the fitting. I did not want to do any more in fear I might damage the water heater.Never able to install this well made anode rod. Returning it.

These units are great so far .... the fit, finish & material feel & look quite robust...removed & replaced the original typical anodes on my two fairly new 40gal.water heaters, installation of this new product was easy & straight forward, perfect diameter & threads fit.....I like the fact that these electric anodes are much shorter, about 1/2 the length ...... showering I could tell a difference in the hot water, it smelled a bit better, maybe cleaner somehow !I think it to be a good value if the anode performs as advertised, & will find out in time !Happy Camper ! ✨👍😉

I think they work for the smell of the well water. One of them seems to be good, but we have 1 that is leaking from the factory seal.
