Product Description

This ball catch is constructed of diecast and steel components and comes finished in a brass plating. The drive-in ball catch features a 3/4 inch x 1-3/16 inch barrel with a steel ball, spring and strike plate. This ball catch is designed to provide a spring-loaded latching system where a standard door knob latch bolt is not required and/or desired. These drive-in ball catch latch devices remain concealed from view once installed, and they are generally used on a pair of swinging double doors with dummy knob hardware.

From the Manufacturer

This ball catch comes in a shiny brass plating. It features an adjustable tensioned ball with a 1 in. face. This catch comes complete with fasteners for a quick and easy installation.

Ordered these to replace several that were failing after several years. The original ones were installed by the interior door manufacturer and were okay but failed after a year or so due to what I think was a very strong spring in the ball assembly. The ball became pitted and gouged the strike plate very noticeably. They also made a loud click when opening/closing.I can't remember seeing black anodized ones so I bought and installed these brass colored ones. They are working much better with a more reasonable sound, none have failed so far and the ball has only lightly marked the strike plate. My only caveat is the strike plate screw holes are not 40 millimeters apart like I remember the paperwork that came with them said and what the old strike plate was too. This strike plate was 42.5 mm apart which the difference was the width of the installing screw; therefore you could not just drill another hole. That said, the outside dimension is the same and will install as a replacement, the screw will go in crooked.BUT, the strike plate doesn't fail, it's the ball assembly in the door. That replaced easily by screwing in the collar a bit and then using a pair of pliers or vise grips to wiggle it out & then a mallet to tap the new one back in.SO, if you're installing for the first time; this is a 5-Star product; if it's a replacement, just replace the ball assembly & toss the strike plate.I'm including a picture of the old (black) plate and new one where I took a felt pen to mark on a piece of paper where the holes on each plate was.

I am sure this is a fine product, but if you have a ball catch on your door, and you're replacing it, make sure this is the kind of catch you need. I've attached pictures of the catch my door had (the ball part was missing, hence the need to replace it)--it's NOT compatible with this one. How to tell: the metal frame part (shown from above and below) of the type I need fits down in the hole in the door (shown in the other picture), and is held in place by two screws. I tried to put the one from this order into the hole, thinking the rim might hold it in place--but it simply fell into the inside of the hollow core door. (The metal plate that comes with this one fits on the door frame, I guess--I fooled myself when I saw it in the Amazon page, thinking it was the part that screwed into the door.)

I have this on my sauna door as it is the safest latch you can use for that purpose. Keeps the wind and weather from blowing the door open, but opens very easily with no hazard of getting jammed. Good quality, and I recommend it.
