I used this to replace the broken handle of a 40 year old sledgehammer I inherited from my dad. This replacement is a beautifully finished piece of hickory. I had to sand it down with a belt sander to get it to fit through the hole, but I'm glad I had to do this because it's now a very tight fit. I like to use round wedges as they seem to hold better than the straight ones. Hopefully this handle will last another 40 years.

Nice handle. We had to sand the upper part for it to fit into the head. Once we got it in it was fine. Working fine.

My hammer opening is 5/8 x 1 1/8. The width of this new handle was too wide to fit and 1/8 short longways. I carefully ground some of the width off both sides. I ended up driving the handle in using a 20lb sledge hammer, a testament to how strong & sturdy this hardwood handle is. Although the width was very tight, the hammer handle protruded above my hammer head by maybe 2 inches. I was able to insert the provided wooden wedge in the handle slot and drove it in all the way. There was a 16th inch gap on each end of the long side of the handle. I drove the 2 provided metal wedges perpendicular to the wooden wedge and that took care of the gap on the long end. It's extremely tight now. The shape of the handle makes it feel secure in my hand swinging it.

Installation required only a bit of shaving; the head of my 3# drill hammer settled nicely in place, and the wedges are perfect. The wood of the handle is very nice with an ideal grain orientation. I sanded it slightly, and rubbed in some linseed oil as my father taught me many years ago. The result is better than new!

I found this small sledgehammer along the roadside one day; the handle was broken but the head was in great shape, so I replaced it with this wooden handle, so far so good.

I found these Vaughn handles to be excellent , 16” long , good grain orientation, made in USA .I used the provided poplar wood wedge. ,handles are coated with Laquer and I sanded it off and coated the handle with a couple coats of boiled linseed oil . Yes I would buy these handles again. BH
