The Lake Superior agate is a type of agate stained by iron and found on the shores of Lake Superior. Its wide distribution and iron-rich bands of color reflect the gemstone's geologic history in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. In 1969 the Lake Superior agate was designated by the Minnesota Legislature as the official state gemstone. The gemstone comes in various sizes. The gas pockets in which the agates formed were primarily small, about 1 cm in diameter. A few Lake Superior agates have been found that are 22 cm in diameter with a mass exceeding 10 kilograms. Very large agates are extremely rare. It is predominantly brown, with layers of creamy browns, whites, reds, blacks and grays. Some may include layers of yellow ochre, gold, scarlet and red. Agate is sometimes called the earth rainbow because, in its various forms, the concentric bands in nature form nearly every color the earth can produce, including a colorless form. I ordered these first maybe 6 months ago. I was so happy. I ordered them again in August and was so disappointed. I tumbled them for 15 days and it made no difference. There was no banding at all. I contacted the sellers and they are nice people who sent me 2 bags to make up for the ugly rocks I received. One problem they were ugly too. I bet you can’t pick the Lake Superior from the Agates, Jaspers and Petrified Wood in the picture.

It was my fault I didn't see that this was only 8oz for $20!! What they sent was crap. Not even worth wasting the time , energy or materials to tumble. I do not recommend this product.

Only about one third of the rocks were close to tumble size, and the rest would be turned to powder if i tried. Only three pieces have banding and two of those were in the pea graval size. Would not recommend wasting money on this product.

I received beautiful large agates with a lot of banding in majority of the agates. I ordered two bags this order. Last order I ordered one bag and received pebbles. Very beautiful pebbles though.

I received 41 stones. Some are tiny chips. 4 decent sized banded agates. 1 chert 1 small polished agate and 1 chunk of what I believe is amber. Besides the amber and chert the rest are indeed real agates. I will be cutting some and tumbling some for use in craft projects. I wish there were more bigger pieces instead of chips but all in all I am pleased with this purchase
