The epitope of Sekonic’s legacy in making fine, versatile and easy to operate light meters is the L-858!I have used Sekonic meters for almost 40 years - and still own many of my past units, all in working order. The reliability and durability of the brand is second to none.The 858 is an incident and reflective spot meter and borrows from the design language of several previous offerings from Sekonic. Chiefly it adds a couple of features that will appeal to flash photographers: the ability to gauge for High Speed Sync (HSS), and the ability to examine the duration of the flash pulse - a feature that I found useful in HyperSync flash preparations, and thanks to it I managed to save a great deal of time!I’m delighted to see that after the experience with the 478 family of light meters where each unit is dedicated to a single strobe trigger system, for the 858 Sekonic has resumed to offer the radio triggering via an optional unit for several strobe brands, even though the triggers themselves are not identical to those that were offered for earlier meters (eg, the L-358). Now a photographer with access to several flash strobes systems need not purchase a whole light meter unit exclusively to that flash, but instead just invest in a separate radio unit for that lighting system. The one notable exception is a major lighting company based in Stockholm, to use their flash units the photographer must use the meters non-corded triggering feature.Today many photographers declare that light meters are no longer needed, a point of view that is well taken given the facilities, camera features and other tools available in this digital age to those who are involved in all styles of photography. Personally, a lightmeter is an artisans tool that guarantees to me the repeatability of my outcomes. The meter and card are incompatible! When the unit is turned on, an error message pops up explaining the card and meter model are incompatible. Really? Does no one check this? And why would Sekonic make a card, designed for this meter, that does not work with it? If the card is removed, the meter works, but not with the card installed.
