So this is a playing mute for when the music says "con sordino" and not a practice mute. It won't dampen the sound a lot, but enough to do what it is supposed to do. I chose this mute over the two-hole variety based on the reviewer who said that this one did not buzz and the other did. This one does not buzz, can't speak for the other as I don't have that one. This one is quick and easy to flip up onto to top of the bridge when needed, and off the bridge and down a little toward the tailpiece when the music says "sans sordino" (without mute.)EDIT: another plus is the small size. My teacher tuned the wolf suppresser on my G string and had to move the mute to between the D and the A strings, where it still works. If it had been larger (the 2 hole variety?) I don't think it would be so flexible in terms of locations where it can be used on the strings. Plus, it is super-quick and easy to move and to use.

We purchased this mute because we liked the little pin at the top to grab it, but when it arrived it doesn’t have it. Very deceiving!

When I showed my teacher the mute, he said it was a viola or violin mute. It's VERY small for a cello mute. Go for the 2 hole version... That said....If you're like me, and play with a lot of 'gusto', it's a good mute to tame the sound down just a bit, so my instrument sits well within my section. If you're looking to really quiet down your instrument, get a mute that spans the bridge,a '4 finger' if you will....

Previously I have used a wooden mute that needs to be taken on and off completely, and also a two-hole, rubber mute that stays on the cello. This one-hole mute is the best. I can keep it on the instrument all the time, and it sits tightly enough that it won't rattle or buzz. The two-hole mute I used before drove me nuts because it would vibrate. I find that if I keep this one-hole mute down near the tailpiece it doesn't affect the sound, and as an added bonus, it acts as a wolf-reducer when I slide it up the G string a couple of inches towards the bridge. I recommend this mute.

My son needed a mute for his cello, so I ordered him this one. It only mutes two strings, but he has found it extremely useful.

Crappiest mute ever. keeps falling and making rattling noise. and squeakes every time you put it on.

Very small, doesn't mute much, but quick to pull on/off and does change the tone a little.

Works very well. Doesn't reduce volume very much.
