I've been baking bread weekly for over 7 years now and have always been frustrated with my inability to cut thin, even slices for sandwiches. I have gone through a couple of excellent, sharp Japanese-made bread knives searching for the perfect tool, but it wasn't the knives afterall, it was my technique, which I was never able to master. While in a deli recently, watching them cut meat thinly and evenly, I thought maybe this was the key to bread slicing, so I started looking online at electric meat slicers. The downsides of electric slicers were price and size. I have limited storage space in my apartment and really don't plan on slicing anything other than bread, so electric seemed like overkill. But, while searching Amazon for meat slicers I ran across this manually operated Starfrit Deli Slicer. It looks like a toy, so I was hesitant to buy it, but at this price-point, it was worth the risk. I love this machine. Yes, it's all plastic, except the blade, and the colors really make it appear toy-like, but it is well made, the user experience is top notch, it folds up neatly, easily and takes up very little space. It took a couple of loaves to get used to the ratio between the speed of the blade (hand cranked), and the speed at which I need to push the loaf to get the cut. What I determined was to let the blade do the cutting and guide, rather than push the loaf, and now I get a nice even, thin (you adjust the thickness to your liking) slice. After the bread has cooled a few hours, I get the slicer out, assemble it (takes about 2 minutes), and slice away. I would estimate that it takes maybe 15 minutes, tops, from the time I get the slicer off the shelf, to the time I'm putting a sliced loaf into the bag and getting the slicer back on the shelf. I haven't done meat yet. I don't expect to. This is an excellent bread slicer and I recommend it highly, especially at this price.

My husband hates slicing our homemade sourdough bread or any meats we get that need trimming down or bricks of cheese. I clearly love to tortue him. haha. BUT with his now he is more okay with it and sometimes enjoys it a little to much.Super easy to use and put together.Sticks to the counter a little to well.Slices like its no ones business. The handle moves smoothly which makes the blade move easy. We've had no issues with slicing things. Its made it through meat, cheese, bread.Easy to cleanStores within itself.

I've recently started baking bread, having tired of the terrible breads on American shelves and being spoiled by breads when living in Germany. I've been pretty unimpressed by the bread slicing options though. While a knife certainly works, it's difficult to get a consistent thickness and cut. I got a couple of the adjustable bread slicers with cutting guides - they just didn't work that well. So then I tried this deli slicer. It works great. I can slice with very high consistency through breads of different densities without problems. I can select the thickness through any useful setting. The single large clamp on the bottom holds the slicer firmly on my granite countertop which I operate the handle. For christmas, we had a vegan breaded roast, which I've historically cut with a large knife, and the slices were much superior - nice edges, consistent thickness.Cleaning is pretty easy. The blade comes off with a simple motion and all except the blade is dish washer safe. It folds up conveniently if you don't want to leave it out.Rotary slicers can be expensive, but this one is very inexpensive. I highly recommend it

So easy and smooth to use. I’ve used it for crusty sourdough with absolute ease, and today sliced eggplants and tomatoes. Slices like soft butter. Finger and hand guard is good. Comes apart easily for cleaning. Love how it stores compactly. Very very happy with this purchase, and a very reasonable price. Delivery was a bit longer than usual, but worth the wait.

Slices nicely—just as described. Good value for the price.

This is a terrible slicer. The suction to the surface (granite countertop) doesn't work at all - so the whole thing moves as you try to slice the bread. The crank is very squeaky and it is hard to move. The only positive is the sharpness of the blade, but it might actually be a hazard with the whole instability of the slicer. Overall a total junk. I do NOT recommend.

I was first impressed with how well this product was able to slice while having to move the meat with one hand and rotate the blade handle with the other. Cut were effortless. However the product fails in consistency. The thickness adjustment doesn’t hold fast, making thin, uniform cuts impossible as the blade adjustment moves making every subsequent cut thicker and thicker.

Great substitute for a 40# meat slicer. It is lightweight. Once I figured out where all pieces went and understood the process, it went smoothly. You can remove the blade for washing - one thing I noticed is the inside of the green turn bolt (middle of blade that holds it in place), has a clear grease compound which leads me to believe it should be greased occasionally. It sliced a Costco chicken breast with ease, at different sizes. It gets easy to slice as the meat piece becomes smaller; larger size weight causes it to get hooked up as the arm is being returned. Requires repositioning meat on the return - minor irritation.Sliced meat comes out at back - does not have a catch tray; need to move it to another surface as you cut.I will use it on frozen french bread - I saw where that is a great option.I plan on purchasing others as gifts. Highly recommend.

I also thought a slicer at this price point could never compete with an electric all-metal slicer. I was wrong.Starfrit makes excellent products, and this Starfrit slicer is now my #1 kitchen appliance. Its body is high quality vinyl and light weight. When folded up, it is compact, with storage spots for handle and food pushers and fits in a cupboard. It unfolds to go to work.- Suction: I set it up on my glass stove top, and the suction lever makes it grip like a boss. I can't move it without using the release!- The metal blade is so sharp that being careful with it is a good idea.- The thickness adjuster permits a slice thickness range from prosciutto-thin to 1" thick. Good for meat, veg, bread, etc. I use it to thinly slice cooked meat to freeze in meal-size bags for last-minute soup additions.- Very easy to clean, as there are no awkward corners where grunge can build up.I love this slicer. It is convenient to unfold, secure and use as needed, and to quickly/easily fold it back up and put away when done. We use it almost daily.A good price for an excellent product.

I used this the other day for the first time and I was quite impressed with it. The suction on it was great, it didn't move around the counter at all. It sliced a dinner ham great. It has alot of thickness settings which is pretty good. You can go at your own speed also. Cleanup is pretty fast too. It folds up so it doesn't take up much room.

I bought this to slice home made bread made in a bread machine. I am very pleased with it. Does what I wanted and only $30. BUT the size of your bread makes a huge difference.I first tried it with a 2lb loaf. The problem was the loaf was taller than the blade. tried laying it on its side but then it was too fat meaning it protruded beyond the edge of the blade. Putting it upright again we had to press down on the top of the loaf to get it low enough for the blade height. so if you want to cut tall loaves get a machine with a bigger blade.Next i baked a 1 lb loaf in the bread machine (breville) and that was incredibly easy to slice.i think a 1 1/2lb would be fine too just not 2lb or bigger if it’s tall. This sets up quick and easy and it’s very compact for storage. Easy to clean.Super happy with it.

I was a bit skeptical because of the price and that this slicer was hand cranked but after using it I was seriously impressed! I sliced up some fancy charcuterie meats and cheeses and it worked great. A bit finicky to start but once you get a hang of it no problem. I couldn’t get it to shave the meat very thin, but thin enough. I also used it in roast beef for beef dips and perfect! Suction cup is strong and it did not budge. It all comes apart easily for cleaning. I would say this is a terrific slicer for the price and a useful addition to your kitchen.
