The steel quality and weld quality is very high on these grates. The extra anti-sag legs welded on is a great idea. This grate could very well last 20+ years in our fireplace. Skip the cheapies, swipe the card and buy one of these. You will be impressed.

I have seen a lot of reviews where people criticize fireplace grates for the paint peeling or falling off. Seriously? Fire usually burns at a minimum of 600°. I'm more concerned with the weld durability and sagging. That being said, this grate is a beast. I have only had three fires so far (hot ones), but no issues to report. The steel is super heavy. The welds appear to be of high quality. But I really like the center support. I can't imagine any sagging over time based on the combination of these three attributes, regardless of heat intensity. It sits a bit taller than most grates I've had or seen, but that lends to a serious bed of coals to keep the fire hot and well-ventilated. Make sure to measure your opening when ordering. I looked for some time before choosing this SteelFreak and I'm not disappointed one bit!

I love the grate, but the legs were too long for my fireplace. I cut the legs so they are only 2 inches long and it now works much better for me. I burn my fires from the top down and depend on the hot coals to keep the bottom logs burning. This didn't work before I shortened the legs since the bottom level of logs was too far from the coals. This left portions of the bottom logs that did not burn. Since I've shortened the legs, all the wood is burned when the fire goes out.

Last grate I had lasted a year and had a meltdown. This is considerably more robust!!!. Its 2 inches higher than previous which does two things. Allows for easier ash cleanout without having to lift the grate up AND allows foe more airflow underneath even after ember accumulation. The other thing that improves airflow is there is NO expanded metal between the rods. Expanded metal does not allow embers to fall below the grate and blocks airflow. Well thought, well designed, well built in the USA!!!!! Yes expensive, but you wont be buying a cheap one every year. Buy the best and cry only once. Jeff

Bought this after two other cast iron grates failed after only a season or two. This wrought iron unit should hold up forever. Very thick bars and better able to handle the heat.

Grate was built very sturdy and better than I thought. Made in the USA! Fit my fireplace perfectly and now I can't wait to try it out in the upcoming months. Well worth the price!
