If you want to use it with an XL600R, wrap the wire around the wire to the PICKUP COIL, not the spark plug wire.Set the device to 1P1R and you’ll be reading the RPMs correctly.No matter what I did; or the settings I chose, it would always read at least double the RPM when I wrapped it around the spark plug wire (wasted spark type ignition I guess).But, if you do five wraps on the pickup coil wire before it plugs into the harness, it matches perfectly with my expensive Bosch timing light within +/-20 RPM.It would be great to have a backlight, but it’s $20, so you get what you pay for.

This is a great product. Don't get caught up on the instructions - they're terrible. And if you watch the video link, you will get deterred very quickly. You don't need to remove the gas tank and all that other craziness. Follow your spark plug wire up to its solenoid and wrap around there (check the pics I posted). The tach DOES work. You need to set it to the proper setting - the instructions are actually good for only this - "If you have a battery or lighting - set RPM (2P:1r)".
