I had a sprinkler zone that was not functioning correctly. Unfortunately, the valve and valve box for the zone were buried over time under grass and dirt. I watched the video on how to use this unit on Amazon and read the instructions when the unit got to me. It came with batteries and headphones, so it was ready to use right out of the box. I knew which wire went from my sprinkler control box to the zone valve I needed to find. I disconnected the power to the sprinkler control box (this is important, as the locator does not like powered wire). I even went so far as to unscrew the zone wire for the zone I was looking for from the control box. I attached the red clip to the zone wire and jammed a long metal screwdriver into the ground and attached the black clip from the locator to the metal part of the screwdriver. I am sure there are other ways to "ground" the black wire, but this method worked great. When you have the sender connected, power both units on (be careful not to have the headphones in when you turn it on-it is loud!). I started to walk our lawn with the locator unit and another long screwdriver, gently swinging the weighted locator umbilical in flat circles in front of me to cover as much ground as I could. Sure enough, after about 10 minutes I started to hear a signal, traced it to where it got loudest, took out my screwdriver, jabbed it in the ground and heard the satisfying "wonk" of my screwdriver hitting the top of my buried plastic valve cover box. The valve was about 10 yards from the sender connected to the wire, and I was looking about 20 yards away from the sender at the longest stretch of yard. Saved me a ton of money, works great and would highly recommend.

I needed to trace some interior wiring in my house behind drywall. I had some speaker wire runs and one wall switch that didn't seem to do anything. After looking around I ordered the Kolsol unit based on some other reviews and with pretty minimal expectations. After receiving the unit and testing a few things I was pleasantly surprised. The unit has done the things I needed to do. I've been able to successfully trace the speaker wires (the other end was tucked behind the cable and ethernet wall plate), the romex (unpowered) from the switch, and I was able to trace the full length of my sprinkler wire run (about 125 ft).The pros:1. It works, clip the transmitter to the wire and a ground (I used a screwdriver stuck in the ground and a long wire for an extension for the sprinkler testing) and you get a good signal that is detectable by the receiver up to a couple of feet away.2. There is enough adjustment on the transmitter power and the volume on the receiver to account for a range of situations. For the tracing behind drywall I dialed the transmitter down and the receiver up. For the sprinkler I dialed the transmitter up and started with the receiver low then went higher as I got further out.3. It worked for buried wires. I don't know exactly how deep my sprinkler wire is buried, but its at least 8-12 inches deep in the grass and maybe 12-18 in in the portion that goes under the flower beds. Maybe not commercial install depth, but probably pretty typical for residential systems. Using the screwdriver for remote ground I had no problem tracing the wire all the way to the end of the run with decent volume the whole way.The cons:1. The volume controls are finicky, sometimes a very small movement of the dial would make the volume change pretty aggressively.2. Its definitely sensitive to ground placement. You may need to experiment a little for best placement.3. The included earbuds are terrible, but given you are just listening for a loud tone they work. Leave them out and take off 50 cents from the price. Everybody has headphones these days.4. It comes with a carry case but the layout of the case is a pain. It would have been better to leave the case out and shave a couple dollars off the price or just have the case be a single pocket for everything to sit in. You have to carefully pack things back in the case and the slide power switch on the side of the receiver has a tendency to get turned on when putting it in the case, so you have to be careful and check it.Overall giving it 4 stars as it did what it was advertised to do at a price point less than the cost to rent a real tracer for a day.

We have a dog fence wire that AT&T cut during their fiber upgrade in our yard. The bozos just taped the splice back together and buried/hid the damage. Fast forward 9 months and the wire corroded from water damage and disabled the dog fence. This could have been a $250 fix but with this tool I was easily able to locate the break and repair it using new outdoor wire and 2 waterproof wire nuts.Make sure to follow instructions carefully - connect red alligator clip to one of the 2 dog fence wires and black clip to an extension cable that runs to ground via long screw driver pounded down into the yard. Switch on transmitter and just hover the receiver over the buried dog fence wire. Mine was a professionally installed wire buried 12” deep in a really dense clay / thick Bermuda grass yard but this thing beeped loud over the good section of wire. Once I got over the corroded/break area the signal faded rapidly. Dig in that area where the signal goes silent and voila the unholiness that AT&T caused was exposed and easily fixed. I’ll keep this thing, it saved me $200 and I’m sure the next idiot crew will also break the wire so I’m sure I’ll need it again !

I use it to localize my power line to my garage in yard and it does work perfectly. Of course this is made of cheap plastic and would not survived in a professional setting were employee would abuse it. But for occasional use it works perfectly and if use with care it probably last a long time.
