I recently started a journey into learning how to make my own homemade mead. It's been a lot of new things to learn but the part I had most trouble with is calculating alcohol contents of completed meads. This Brix Meter has helped me immensely with that particular part of the process. It's so easy to use and the readings are very clear. Definitely a great little tool for any home brewer to have around.

I've had this tool for just under a year and it has served me well for the most part. It's accurate when tested against superior lab grade tools and it's very easy to use and carry. My only complaint is that it began to corrode much sooner than anticipated, within a few months, although luckily that hasn't affected the tool much and I can still use it for what matters. I was diligent in cleaning right away except perhaps once or twice when in a rush, and that seemed enough to allow corrosion to creep in.

The only thing this refractometer measures accurately is water. Don't buy this if you're needing an accurate tool. I would give it zero stars if I could.

This is a nice little meter. The line you're supposed to look for , at the edge of the blue region, is a little soft with lavender fringe. I'm not experienced enough with these to know how that affects the accuracy, but I'm confident about its precision if you've calibrated it and picked a point in the split. I showed a picture of where it was with water compared to where it was with a sugar solution. When I received it, the blue covered the entire viewing area, but it's easy to calibrate. Just put some distilled water in there and adjust the screw until the clear/blue split occurs at 0.

A refractometer measures the sugar content of foods and liquids by using the bending of light to determine the specific gravity, i.e., the amount of sugar dissolved in a liquid. You get an output using the Brix scale (1 Brix is equal to 1 g sugar in 100 g (or ml) of water). It is great for testing the sweetness of fruits, syrups or drinks. It is straightforward to calibrate this refractometer. Then, you just need a couple of drops of liquid. Although low tech, it is still a powerful tool. This refractometer is robust and very well made.

The only difficult step is calibrating before first use or after unused awhile. Once calibrated using the easy to follow instructions, it becomes a breeze to use it to gauge the brix (nutrient) levels in all sorts of produce and even for sweet liquids like honey or maple syrup. Comes in a hard-shelled carrying/storage case that is lined with foam. Also includes a pipette and an adjustment screwdriver. For the price, this is excellent value. A definite buy!

This refractometer is easy to use. It arrived calibrated and ready to go. So far I've used it to measure sugar content in some homemade syrups and juices, along with testing on oils and honey. For thin syrups (consistency of maple syrup) and juices it works very well. For vegetable oils, it would help if the textured plate were removable for washing - it's difficult to completely clean oil off the surface, although that did lead to measuring the index of dish detergent! The honey I attempted to measure was slightly crystalized and the crystals interfere almost completely with refraction. Possibly could have warmed it up to liquify it, but directions say to use the refractometer only in a room temperature range. For juices, this is much easier than using a hygrometer.A good compact tool, comes packed in a sturdy well padded plastic case complete with a basic flexible plastic pipette and a calibration screwdriver. The pipette is ok for thin liquids if a little hard to clean. For syrups, I simply gathered a very small quantity on a plastic butter knife and transferred it to the plate.Considering the price and how well it works, high recommendation!
