I purchased this model in Feb. 2015 to replace a 10 yr old previous model that broke. I thought, well, it lasted for 10 years, why spend $200 or more on a 3/4 Hp unit or a more expensive 1/2 Hp unit? Also, I thought by purchasing the same model I was hoping I wouldn't have to mess with the putting in a new sink opening hardware and hanger. One other thing, we liked the slim design which worked well under the sink for leaving more maneuvering room and storage under the sink.I installed the unit myself and it was very straightforward. It did indeed fit in the former hanger from the sink opening. Also, since it remained about the same width, all the plumping and the dishwasher discharge hose all lined up exactly the same way so I didn't have to change anything there. I just moved them out of the way and then moved them back in line. I did utilize the new large gasket ring that simply slips in place at the bottom of the hanger opening.Upon running the unit for the first time I was pleased with how much quieter it was than the old unit. It has worked well for the past few weeks. The one thing to remember is there are two choices in ordering: a) A unit with a cord that has a plug in the end to simply plug in the wall. This is what I needed/wanted; b) A unit with a cord that needs to be hardwired into the wall. They were different prices. I was ready to push the submit order button when I realized I was ordering the hard wired instead of the cord with a plug. I deleted and made sure I ordered the plug in model. I would recommend this unit.

I wouldn't get this style of disposal to replace the 3 bolt mounting type. I have a newer home and it came with the dinkiest, loudest, and least effective disposal I've ever had the displeasure to use. I lived with it until it died and didn't want to spend a lot of money or time switching to the other style. This unit went right on in less than 5 minutes.Yes, it's loud. Yes, the water doesn't go down and fills the sink but it's faster, better, stronger than the one it replaced. I don't put anything into the disposal intentionally so I can't comment as to its bona fides to the people that live dangerously like that.

I recently moved into a new (to me) home and in the first week, have had the joy of replacing the built-in microwave and the garbage disposal. When our garbage disposal started leaking around the reset button, I knew a replacement was in order. The old unit was an In Sink Erator 1/3 horsepower unit. I started looking on Amazon and decided on this GE unit based on reviews and my previous experience with the brand.**One thing to note - this model is offered in both "Hard Wired" and "Power cord attached" versions. If you want to plug in the disposal instead of wire it into your homes electrical system, this is the unit for you.**This disposal was simple to install and offers quiet, efficient operation. There are bigger versions of this model, but with the previous unit being 1/3 horsepower, I thought an upgrade to 1/2 horsepower in a similar size would be sufficient. Includes the splasher and stop guard as expected. I did have to cut the hose that runs into our undersink plumbing so it would fit. Wasn't difficult at all. Clear, concise directions are included. This unit does not appear to have an allen wrench for clogs, but so far we haven't had a need for one.For $100, this unit should last a good while and I'm happy with it.Follow up:This unit died after just over 7 years of use. Would turn on for one second then trip the built in breaker. I was happy enough with it so bought another of the exact model. Took 10 minutes to switch them out and hopefully good for another 7-10 years or more.

I shopped around and this GE 1/2 HP Disposall was 30% less than the same at the big box stores. It was simple to install and worked perfect out of the box.Note: I am in the electrical trade, thus I have many plumbing friends. They all told me to purchase and use plumbers putty for my seal, instead of the rubber gasket that comes with the product. It’s around $4 at any hardware store.
