Their elastic, steel alloy core has a high inertia to musical vibration. On the instrument, the mandolin strings sound clear and brilliant, with no metallic twang. The string's structure has been optimized for tremolo play. This string set responds well to fast changes of fingering. Tuning is stable and the strings are durable. Thomastik-Infeld mandolin strings are supplied in pairs, and we recommend changing strings two at a time.

Dislike? Price, and that's gospel. Even so, I shall now tend rhapsodic about these eight little beauties.I use the medium-weight on both my mandolins: a 1914 Gibson A0 pumpkin and an (estimated) 1880-ish Galliano di Nappoli Cremona-style (tater-bug for all you Americans) 26 rib with a face about the thickness of a postage stamp. I "EFFIN' LOVE THESE STRINGS !!I'm retired (76) and play very little anymore, my hands think I should stop altogethe, but I have now had the present strings on the instruments, tuned A-440 and they are still in tune whenever I pick them up to play. The sound is 95% (after three years) as bright as when I put them on and they still feel "Smppth as Peggy Shippen's (look her up!) back.Of course I have extra sets "J.I.C." but i consider the investment to be money well spend. Proof of this is that I bought six sets some time ago at (I think) $41.50per set and I can forsee the prices only continue to escalate due to difficulties in getting raw materials and possibly atrittion of skilled artisans fir creating these delights.Did I mention I love these strings?Oh.

They sound fantastic! Lows are round and soft, and highs are bright and clear. The lower tension and thinner low strings make it easier to fret notes on those strings higher up the neck. The G strings don't "split apart" when I use my ring or pinky on the 7th fret or above. I also found these easier to put on than the usual strings. I especially appreciated the cloth winding near the tuners for the three wound pairs. Would have been nice for the E's, but they were not so hard to put on, and I didn't feel like they were close to breaking (I've broken a few E strings). The only disadvantage might be that the E's don't sound as good tuned down to D, if you like that tuning. You could always sub in a higher-tension E set if you like.

Super warm yet clear sound. Very good choice for my 100+ year old bowl-back mandolin. They must be the easiest strings to put on an instrument I have ever tried - something about the thickness and material make them so easy to wind up and stay in place.Very expensive but worth it. If you're going to spend $50 on strings you should experiment with picks too of course. My favorite pick for a soft sound is a white Wolle pick and for a harder sound the pickboy nytro .75mm picks.I haven't tried cheaper flatwound strings so I'm not sure how they compare but I will be using these anyway because they just sound great.

These are very nice strings. They produce a nice sound - mellow but almost bright. Best thing about them is they feel so smooth to the touch. Worst thing about them is the high price. 3 to 4 times the price of most other strings. Why?

I love these mandolin strings! Has great tone and you can’t beat the feel. No string noise either. They last a long time. I won’t use any other brand of flat wound strings!!!

If you like strings that feel great but make your mando sound like a toy these are for you. Tiny and tinny sound. One of the A strings broke two days after putting them on. Please go buy some sane mando strings, preferably some heavy gauge that allow your instrument to exude its full potential. STAY AWAY.PS funny enough I love TI upright bass strings ... go figure ...

I use these strings on a Trinity College mandola, and they are just barely long enough. They run a little shorter than other mandolin strings -- and they are LOOP-END, not ball-end, so they should work with most acoustic mandolins.Thomastik strings are the loudest, brightest, and most flexible flat-wound strings I've found, that said they're still a bit darker than bronze and don't have a harsh bark some people like in their chop. The strings don't have the "dead" sound that flat-wound La Bella and D'Addario strings have, either -- the sustain is about as good as any round-wound mandolin string I've found. Thomastik heavy strings feel flexible when fretted, especially for a heavy or flat-wound string, and are easy to play.If you're worried about the cost, flat-wound strings last much longer than round-wound, collecting less finger dirt, and you might consider wiping down the strings with string cleaner regularly. Longer-lasting strings mean more play time, which I think by itself justifies the cost.

l have to admit that I was initially skeptical about the price of the Thomastik-Infeld 154 Mandolin strings when compared to other brands at much more (perceived) reasonable prices. I decided to give these a go anyway and am certainly glad that I did. After stringing my mandolin about a month ago I noticed an immediate difference from my previous strings. These were incredibly vibrant in sound and feel amazing to play. Unlike my previous strings, these are smooth and easy on the fingers. I've also noticed that they have continued to feel "as new" even at a month old and considerable play time under all conditions. It is hard initially to pay the higher price for these strings but what it has done for the tone of my mandolin was worth the price two fold. Very happy with this purchase and plan on making this the string of choice in the future.

Le jeu fort est très agréable à entendre .Pour la dureté des cordes, il n'y a pas de grosse différence et on s'y fait, mais vraiment le son est d'une pureté exceptionnelle!!!

I’ve been using these strings for 8 weeks now for about 12 hours playing per week so feel able to give a considered opinion.I was a bit put off by the price at first but a great player I know, Polly Bolton, suggested I try them. I have several really good mandos but decided to try these on my luthier built flat top made by Steve Suggitt of Chapel Guitars. It’s a fairly bright instrument with a unique voice but I’d often thought that the usual phosphor bronze daddarios etc didn’t quite bring out its best though the eft74s were very good. Anyway bit the bullet and paid the money. What a surprise! They feel superb to play, easy on the fingers with a fast, direct action.Faultless intonation on the fan fretted fingerboard.A very traditional mandoliny sound trending towards the classical sound that has developed as they’ve been played. They have a sound that I’m told is very easy to place in a mix either live or for recording. They show no sign of wear or deterioration and seem to be still improving. By this time most types of string would be overdue for replacement!I’m impressed and will be continuing to use them on this instrument. I don’t think I’d try them on my f5 for bluegrass style but recommend them for anyone playing a folky Celtic style or even ragtime.Well worth the price!
