I had loose wires in my water heater closet. They had no power. I also had several loose wires in my fuse panel. When I added a powered anode I needed a 120 ac outlet. I searched for the correct wires in the fusebox that went to the water heater closet with out success. I had seen an electrician use a tone generator before. After searching for a tone generator that would work with AC wiring I found it confusing as to which one would work for my needs. Most infisize telephone and ethernet work but if you cuntinue to read it says it can be used on ac wiring as long os wires have no power. After checking the wires at the water heater to verify no power I connected the tone generator then removed the circuit breaker cover and began searching for the wires that are connected to the tone generator. Taking the receiver I began to seach for the neutral white wire. I was able to quickly locate the correct wire. You have to take your time as wires close to the correct wire will also chirp. The trick is locating the wire with the loudest chirp. Next I began the search for the black positive wire. The black wire chirps faster and louder than the white neutral wire. It turns out the wire I was looking for was in the middle of a bundle of black wires. It was cut of smooth and very difficult to see. Without the tone generator I doubt I would have been able to locate the correct wire. You might want to use the receiver close to the tone generator to get a sample of what the proper wire should sound like.

Does the work even though it's cheaply made. Screws won't survive 3 battery swap for sure and some plastic needed manual curating inorder to insert the battery (battery not included). For the price, compared to the other available options, if you need something simple for a short time that's the one you want(especially if you don't know what you're doing, mistakes happen).Just one thing, if you work on house electrical wires, don't forget to unplug it before turning the power back on..... (Another reason to go with the cheap one!)

The first one arrived broken (red lead was detached inside the tone generator.) Amazon replaced the unit quickly. I was using it to trace landscape lines. Very basic functionality, yet useful when all the lines look the same! The tone may be a little soft, so in a bundle of cables it might take a while to really find the one making the tone. But it is doable.Overall: A useful tool at a reasonable price.

This product is of extremely low quality. It comes in a nice zipper carrying case but the product is just junk. When it arrived I put in batteries and that were new from a sealed 9volt package, did some basic testing of the tone and continuity testing then turned it off. A few days later I powered both ends up and tried to trace wires the batteries were dead. I replaced them with two fresh batteries and tried to do some testing only to realize it is so utterly unsuitable for its advertised purposes that I stopped using it. The 9volt batteries were more valuable then the product itself. The product has almost no range for wire tones. I tested it on a 15 ft extension cord and no tone more then about 3 ft down the wire. The extension cord passed continuity testing with this device and my multimeter. This took is junk, I threw it out and didn't get the job done. Don't buy it. Disreputable brand, you have to take it apart to install a battery pair in each end, it's incredibly fragile and the 9volt battery connectors don't fit right (too small). I think this might be a fraudulent product and should not be sold on Amazon. Disappointed, too good to be true and definitely is at its price point and functionality compared to the tone tool I ended up buying so I could actually get the job done. I chucked everything but the carrying case in the trash and want to warn others to not count on this tool for anything.

I found the transmitter to be of superior quality but have had intermittent issues with the receiver component. The receiver works sometimes & has static sound when pressing the TEST button. For the price though it serves it’s purpose. I would recommend a better quality device. However the continuity LED function on the transmitter works great. Haven’t tried the phone function but I’m sure it functions as advertised.

Do you have the unenviable task of tracing out disused telecom wiring after a major refit?Such was my dilemma.... a doorbell integrated with a telephone system becomes useless after the system is replaced. The wiring remains but the utility closet has many dozens, well over a hundred, of similar data and telephone cables all in one place. The distance involved was roughly 70 feet / 21 meters on the floor, about 90 feet / 27 meters of cable length. It would be a pity to have to run a new cable when one already exists, right?Well, this tool's transmitter clamps on to the know end, in this case at the door terminal, and the receiver had no difficulty in picking out the relevant wires from a distribution frame at the other end of the building. In no time at all, I got them tagged and ready for re-use with the new system.

This item did what it said but plastic quality was cheap and to get a trace you Had to be on top of the wire. Not practical at times when tracing a bundle and it's the only wire with the power on it. If you want something for one time use it's OK. I bought the Harbor freight one and it was perfect for the job for a few bucks more.
