I had tried a few different auger bits and the common problem was that they couldn't drill into the end grain of an oak log. This bit does it almost too well. I believe the reason it works so well is because the starter threads at the tip are longer than other bits I tried and they pull the bit right into the wood. I also like the 2 notches on either side of the cutting edge. I believe these prevent the bit from digging in to hard on either side and binding up which can be dangerous with a bit this size. Over all if you had a hard time finding a reliable auger bit that can cut end grain on hardwood, then your search is over.

As with all of my diablo bits, this makes short work when boring through 2x framing when paired with a torquey drill.

Tip broke off after a few dozen holes even though nothing hard was encountered. I assume that with the torque applied to the narrow area near the tip, exceeds its yield strength snapping it off......it doesn't have to encounter a nail to break off. There's a reason that the return warranty is only 30 days.....the tip will probably break off if its used any longer.
